Who are we?

Newmedica are one of the leading providers of NHS ophthalmology services in England, providing outpatients appointments, diagnostic testing and eye surgery. We aim to change lives through better sight and eye health.

We care for thousands of NHS and private patients a year in our specialist eye clinics across the country.

Newmedica has been certified as a Great Place to Work for the third year running and is listed among the UK’s top 50 Best Workplaces™ for 2025.

Role Overview

We are looking for a bank Ophthalmic Assistant to join our site in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

Our Ophthalmic Assistants are the face of Newmedica and are often among the first people that patients interact with on clinic visits, so having a welcoming, friendly, empathetic approach is vital.

It’s a busy role – you’ll be seeing a number of patients each day to take them through a range of diagnostic tests, which are passed onto a senior clinician to determine if surgery or further treatment is required. You’ll use a variety of equipment and systems, so we’re looking for someone comfortable with technology. Additional duties may include supporting theatre teams by looking after patients, escorting them to and from theatre, and fetching and preparing theatre equipment.

The thought of eye surgery can be daunting for patients, so our Ophthalmic Assistants must soothe patients, maintain strong communication skills, and clearly explain the purpose of different tests.

This role is a great opportunity to progress clinical skills or take the first step on a clinical career path. Newmedica is committed to the growth and development of all colleagues, and the Ophthalmic Assistant position can lead to careers in diagnostic (clinic) or theatre teams.

What Skills and Experience Do I Need?

  • Previous experience of working with patients or in a customer‑facing role.
  • Knowledge of eye physiology and treatment or a keen interest in building knowledge in this area.
  • A competent user of all Office 365 programmes and comfortable working on new systems such as patient record systems or diagnostic programmes.
  • An excellent grasp of the English language, both verbally and in written format.
  • Experience of dealing with a variety of data, e.g., patient records, GP and patient correspondence, and diagnostic test results.
  • A good team player – happy to jump in and support others when required.

What We’re Offering

  • A rate of £135 – £150 per day, dependent on experience.
  • An environment where your learning and development are supported through a range of learning tools and courses.
  • Working with a friendly multi‑disciplinary team passionate about improving the lives of our patients.
  • A bright, spacious and modern working environment built to the highest standards.
