Newman Stewart is partnering with a successful manufacturing and engineering organisation in the Tees Valley to recruit a Financial Controller.

Our client is a well-established manufacturer supplying into markets across the UK and Europe.

Following continued growth and investment, the business is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to lead the finance function and support both the existing operation and the development of an exciting new venture.

Job Summary

We are looking for a commercially minded Financial Controller to provide financial leadership across an established manufacturing business whilst supporting the growth of a developing start‑up operation.

Reporting to the senior leadership team, you will be responsible for financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management and commercial decision support across both businesses.

This is a broad role requiring a hands‑on finance leader who can balance strong financial control with operational and strategic involvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation of monthly management accounts, including variance analysis and commentary.
  • Manage budgeting, forecasting and longer‑term financial planning activities.
  • Maintain robust financial controls and ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Monitor cash flow, working capital and overall business performance.
  • Provide financial analysis and commercial insight to support operational decision making.
  • Work closely with senior stakeholders on strategic planning and business improvement initiatives.
  • Support the development of financial processes, controls and reporting within a growing start‑up venture.
  • Manage relationships with auditors, banks and external advisers.
  • Lead, develop and support the finance team.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement across finance systems, reporting and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
  • Previous experience as a Financial Controller, Finance Manager or similar senior finance position.
  • Experience within manufacturing, engineering, contracting or another operationally focused environment.
  • Strong management accounting, budgeting and forecasting experience.
  • Commercially aware, with the ability to support operational and strategic decision making.
  • Experience leading and developing finance teams.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience using ERP or accounting systems.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • Experience within fabrication, manufacturing, engineering or industrial environments.
  • Knowledge of cost accounting, inventory management or project costing.
  • Experience supporting business growth, acquisitions or new ventures.
  • Experience improving financial systems, controls and reporting processes.
