Newham Community SCITT programme

We are delighted to partner with Teach First to deliver our Newham Community SCITT programme. Teach First is a national charity dedicated to nurturing teachers and leaders who are passionate about making a real difference where it’s needed most. Our SCITT programme is designed for people who want to dive into teaching from day one. It’s a one-year course that blends hands‑on experience with expert training, allowing you to develop your teaching skills directly in the classroom. This programme is perfect if you’re eager to learn on the job while positively impacting your local community.

Our approach

You’ll receive subject‑specific training and develop a deep understanding of what works in the classroom, all while gaining plenty of practical experience. You’ll start your journey in September 2026, stepping into the classroom from day one. Throughout your training, you’ll be supported by a dedicated mentor, there to guide you every step of the way. By the end of the programme, you’ll not only gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) but also a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)—equipping you with both the knowledge and the credentials to launch a successful teaching career.

Why train with us?

Our one‑year training allows you to quickly start working as a fully qualified teacher. After your 12 months of training, you’ll start on a qualified teacher’s starting salary of at least £30,000. You’ll benefit from initial teacher training that’s developed by Teach First and delivered by local Ascend teacher development experts. Teach First is the largest initial teacher training provider in the country, with over 20 years’ experience. Teach First’s initial teacher training is rated outstanding by Ofsted. You’ll have year‑long support from a subject mentor and a lead mentor. They’ll train you and oversee your progress throughout. You’ll belong to the Newham community and have access to our high‑quality professional development across the trust and in your placement school.

You will be given the opportunity to observe lessons, meet our students and our current trainee teachers and early career teachers, a real insight of what it is like to train and teach in an NCL school.

Eligibility

• An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.
• To demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the subject you are applying to teach, either through your degree qualification, your A Levels or relevant experience.
• Grade 4 (C) or above in English and Maths GCSEs, or equivalent qualification.

We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs. Functional skills qualifications are not equivalent to Maths and English GCSEs. We accept most equivalency test providers. You will need to have passed your GCSE equivalency test before applying to our programme; we will not be able to process your application until you have passed. Overseas qualifications will be reviewed by the UK national agency for international qualifications and skills (ENIC) to ensure they meet programme requirements.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

• Are an Irish citizen.
• Have settled or pre‑settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply).
• Have indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee‑paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for 2026/2027 are as follows:

• For UK students: £9,790.
• For International students: £15,000.

You will be registered as a full‑time student throughout the programme so have access to lots of student benefits, as well as a student loan to cover your fees. Depending on your subject and qualifications, you may also be eligible for a bursary or grant to support you throughout your training. Find out more on this website scholarships and bursaries.
