The Lecturer in Civil Engineering/Surveying (Apprenticeships) will play a critical role in delivering high-quality teaching, learning and assessment across civil engineering and surveying apprenticeship programmes at Level 3. The postholder will act as a course tutor to groups of apprentices, supporting both their academic achievement and professional development. Operating within the Apprenticeships Department, the role contributes directly to curriculum delivery, employer engagement and continuous quality improvement, ensuring provision meets awarding body requirements, employer needs and Newham College's strategic priorities. The postholder will create an inclusive, engaging and high-performance learning environment that drives learner progression, achievement and positive destinations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and deliver outstanding teaching, learning and assessment, using digital technologies and blended learning approaches where appropriate.
  • Act as Course Tutor, providing academic guidance, pastoral support and progress monitoring for apprentice cohorts.
  • Assess, mark and return learner work in line with awarding body requirements and College standards.
  • Maintain accurate and timely curriculum documentation, including lesson plans, schemes of work, ILPs and learner progress tracking.
  • Liaise proactively with employers to ensure apprentices are effectively supported in the workplace and programme requirements are met.
  • Contribute to internal and external quality assurance, moderation and standardisation processes.
  • Support learner recruitment, selection and induction activity, including open days and enrolment events.
  • Implement attendance, absence and disciplinary procedures in line with College policy.
  • Embed safeguarding, Equality and Diversity, British Values, employability skills and health and safety into all aspects of delivery.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, quality improvement planning, self-assessment and review processes.
  • Participate in CPD, staff development, cross-cover and wider College activities as required.

Qualifications and experience

  • Level 2 English and Maths.
  • Degree-level qualification or a minimum of five years' relevant industry experience in construction, civil engineering or surveying.
  • Level 5 teaching qualification (DET, DTLLS, PGCE, Cert Ed or equivalent), or willingness to achieve within two years.
  • Experience delivering accredited provision to 16-18 and/or adult learners.
  • Knowledge of apprenticeship delivery and employer-led provision.
  • Proven ability to deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Strong understanding of quality improvement, assessment and awarding body compliance.
  • Ability to embed English, Maths and employability skills within vocational programmes.
  • Effective stakeholder management skills, including employer engagement.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Confident use of digital systems, including Microsoft applications and learner management systems.
  • Clear understanding of safeguarding, Prevent and inclusive practice.
