Your role as a Transport Planner
An opportunity has arisen for a Transport Planner to join our Wakefield transport operation. This role sits at the centre of a busy, time critical environment and will play a key part in ensuring efficient planning of driver routes, vehicle utilisation, and customer deliveries across multiple sites. This is a role suited to someone who thrives on pace, problem solving, and continuous improvement, with a strong understanding of compliance and operational delivery.
Location & Compensation
- Location: NewCold Wakefield, Headways, Stanley, WF3 4FE.
- Salary: Up to £45,000 per annum.
- Hours: 42.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and manage daily transport schedules to meet delivery profiles and operational requirements.
- Ensure all driver routes comply with Drivers’ Hours Regulations, Working Time Directive (Road Transport) Regulations 2005, and company policies.
- Work collaboratively with drivers, controllers and operational teams to maintain service levels.
- Monitor KPIs, identifying trends and implementing corrective actions where required.
- Communicate effectively with drivers regarding route changes, delivery instructions, and operational updates.
- React proactively to volume fluctuations, delays, and operational disruptions.
- Liaise with customers and internal stakeholders to coordinate bookings and resolve service challenges.
- Support transport compliance activities including documentation, audits, and reporting.
- Minimise empty running and manage backhaul and subcontractor activity.
- Engage with external partners including driver agencies and subcontractors to ensure resource availability.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within transport planning and execution.
Skills and Experience
- Proven experience within a transport planning role (3 years+).
- Transport Manager CPC is essential for this role.
- Strong working knowledge of transport compliance and drivers’ hours legislation.
- Experience using Transport Management Systems.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Confident communicator with a collaborative approach.
- Strong problem solving capability and ability to make informed decisions under pressure.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and planning systems.
