We are seeking to appoint a self-employed peripatetic music teacher to join our thriving Music department. We’re seeking passionate singing teachers to deliver instrumental lessons from January 2026.
Salary: Peripatetic music teachers are self-employed and invoice parents directly. The School would expect the fee to be standardised across the Peripatetic Body (currently £40 per hour or £20 per 30 minutes).
Hours of work: Part-time and dependent upon uptake. Term time only.

The School Newcastle School for Boys is an independent day school located in the heart of Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. From September 2026, we begin a new and exciting chapter, becoming The Newcastle School and welcoming girls into our community for the first time; building on the legacy of Newcastle School for Boys. Our school offers a unique through-school education from Early Years to Sixth Form, ensuring a seamless academic journey for every pupil, every step of the way. From September 2026, we will welcome girls into the Junior School and Sixth Form with the rest of the Senior School to follow in September 2027.

The Music Department
Music is a central part of the school’s offering. The music department consists of the two Music Subject Leaders in both Senior and Junior Schools, as well as six visiting music tutors specialising in piano, woodwind, guitar, strings, brass and drums. Additionally, a wide range of co-curricular musical opportunities are offered including rock band, jazz band, orchestra, a range of instrumental clinics, Garage band, improvisation and many more. Regular class music lessons and ensemble rehearsals are held in music departments in both sites as well as local facilities such as Gosforth Civic Theatre and Northern Stage, where pupils prepare for concerts and productions. Many pupils participate in a variety of performance opportunities within school life, showcasing their talent and enthusiasm for music. The school also hosts House Singing competitions and regular solo and ensemble concerts, where pupils develop teamwork and creative skills. Weekly choirs are available for all year groups, and a variety of whole-school musical events take place throughout the year.
The Role
Main duties of the role are:
- Inspiring musical performance of the highest quality through committed, skilled and outstanding one-to-one teaching.
- Teaching to the individual needs, abilities and talents of each child, suggesting repertoire and adapting scores where necessary.
- Identifying clear teaching objectives and learning outcomes, with appropriate challenge to deliver outstanding quality.
- Assessing pupils’ progress, giving termly individual feedback to pupils and their parents as to how to progress further.
- Ensuring that the School’s Policies are reflected in daily practice.
- Actively promoting and encouraging pupils’ participation in extra-curricular music, including solo recitals in Young Musician Assemblies and school concerts.
- Entering pupils for examinations as and when appropriate.
- Invoicing parents in a timely manner at the beginning of a new term.
- Communicating with parents and responding to parents’ queries and concerns as and when they arise in a professional and timely manner.
- Utilising the SMHW system to share resources.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience in teaching singing to pupils aged between 3-18, both boys and girls.
- A unique and inspiring approach to teaching singing.
- Performing experience in their own right.
- A sound understanding of technique, particularly with regard to young singers.
- An ability to work as part of a team.
- An approachable and engaging manner.
- An understanding of, and commitment to, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
- Willingness to be involved in whole-school events.
