This is a full-time, 1-year fixed term Research Assistant position at the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at the Faculty of Medical Science and provides an exciting opportunity for an early career scientist who is interested in developing Apps using wearable technology and novel machine learning techniques for tracking and managing fatigue in long term conditions. You will join an interdisciplinary group (DIAN Research Group) who has an established international reputation in mobility analysis, digital health outcomes and wearable technology advanced analytics. You will work as part of the Digital healthcare Applications for Translational Advancement Team: DATA-Team supporting the Newcastle NIHR BRC Industry Project “Digital Technologies for Managing Chronic Fatigue: Wearable Devices and Smartphone App” led by Dr Silvia Del Din. The project is funded through the Newcastle NIHR BRC.

The role involves collaborating with an industry partner developing ECG-capable wearable devices to integrate high-quality, ECG-derived HRV into the FatigueSense mobile App. FatigueSense is an AI-enabled platform that predicts and helps users manage fatigue using wearable and self-reported data.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with a strong interest in digital health, wearable technologies and AI-driven healthcare applications. We are looking for individuals with experience in App development (and familiarity with the FatigueSense App), PPIE, signal processing and the analysis of wearable sensor data, alongside strong programming skills in Matlab, Python, R or similar languages. Experience in machine learning, digital health technologies and collaborative interdisciplinary research environments would be highly advantageous. Key Accountabilities

  • Collect, analyse and interpret research data and draw conclusions on the outcomes
  • Co‑ordinate own work with that of others, use problem solving to affect the achievement of research objectives and contribute to the planning of the project(s)
  • Present information on research progress and outcomes to a Principal Investigator or groups overseeing the research project
  • Write up results from own research activity and provide input into the research project's dissemination, in whatever form (report, papers, chapters, books)
  • Use research resources (including, where required, Laboratories, workshops and specialist equipment) as appropriate

The Person

Knowledge, Skills And Experience

  • Experience of the area of research, specifically of development of digital health Applications and machine Learning techniques applied for fatigue quantification
  • Expertise working with wearable technology data and analysis, machine Learning/ AI techniques
  • Experience with signal processing and Application (App) development (especially as applied to fatigue estimation, e.g., FatigueSense)
  • Very good knowledge of and experience using Matlab or equivalent programming Languages (e.g., R, Python)
  • Experience with PPIE activities
  • Attention to detail and ability to work at high Levels of accuracy
  • Ability to present complex information effectively to a range of audiences
  • Proven ability to analyse data and write‑up results
  • Experience of working collaboratively with colleagues
  • Excellent IT skills in all major office applications
  • The ability to use personal initiative and creativity to solve research problems
