The Role
The purpose of this Postdoctoral Research Role in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University is to conduct research on the project ‘War and geos: the environmental legacies of militarism’. The project was awarded as a European Research Council Starting Grant and is now funded by UKRI Horizon Europe (project number: EP/X042642/1).
Led by Dr Mark Griffiths, ‘War and geos’ is a 5-year, interdisciplinary study into the long-term effects of “precision” munitions used in recent military operations in Gaza and Iraq. The role involves tracing and mapping weapons supply chains to produce a body of data for inquiry into munitions residues and environmental effects.
The post provides an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to work with leading researchers in political geography and to develop an independent research profile. This role is fixed term for 30 months.
Key Accountabilities
- Work towards research the objectives on the project ‘War and geos’: tracing and mapping the supply of weapons in contemporary war
- Implement and further techniques of military supply chain tracing
- Produce an innovative package of data visuals for use in project dissemination activities
- Undertake and advance own research, based on the development of personal research objectives and plans
- Present and publish research, through conference presentations and academic publications, individually and collaboratively with colleagues
- Work both independently and collaboratively
- Contribute to collaborative ethos of Geography at Newcastle and the wider War and geos team
- Develop personal research networks to support research activities and future career development

- Research interests and skills closely aligned with the project aim of investigating military activities
- Knowledge of innovative techniques in mapping and military activities
- Developed skills in the visual presentation of data
- Experience of carrying out independent research and developing research ideas and methodologies
- Experience of writing up research for publication
- Ability to publish, either as a sole or joint author, in high-quality academic journals
- Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with diverse audiences, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
