Newcastle Law School seeks to appoint a Reader in Law to join our forward‑thinking, inclusive Russell Group Law School that seeks to embed its values in all that it does: Challenge; Social Justice; Compassion; Wellbeing; Excellence; Responsibility; and Respect. We are looking for an outstanding scholar and an inspirational/dedicated educator. You should have a strong track record of producing internationally excellent and world‑leading research and an established and growing international standing and reputation. Experience of funding success, impact and/or a willingness to collaborate across legal fields, other disciplines and engage with industry and/or external partners is also desirable. You should have demonstrable experience of module design, module leadership and teaching in at least one of the following areas – Contract, Commercial, Land and/or Equity. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. A record of attracting and supervising Postgraduate Research students is also required.

Key Accountabilities

  • Teaching & Learning
    • Provide high‑quality research‑led teaching activity, set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with university standards and utilise online and digitised curricula and education frameworks.
    • Supervise dissertation students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
    • Mentor and support students throughout their studies.
    • Contribute to skills, curriculum and programme development as required.
  • Research
    • Conduct research that demonstrates international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour (REF 3* & 4*).
    • Engage with the external research funding environment as an individual scholar and/or as someone whose work can contribute to large‑scale collaborative initiatives.
    • Proactively advance and maximise the external impact of their research, engaging with external stakeholders where possible.
    • Contribute to the research community of the Law School and, where relevant, wider University and work to enhance the research profile and reputation of the Law School.
    • Supervise PGR (postgraduate research) students and lead in attracting and supervising postgraduate research students.
  • Other
    • Operate as an active, present and collegial citizen in the Newcastle Law School community.
    • Undertake a range of administrative tasks to support your area of teaching, research, engagement and/or student experience.
    • Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees.
    • As a senior colleague, provide academic leadership to colleagues and students, take responsibility for a defined citizenship or leadership role and, when needed, contribute to our strategic development.
    • Have responsibility for the design, development, implementation and/or administration of programmes of study.

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Evidence of a sustained national and international research profile and proven track record in producing international and world‑leading publications.
  • Evidence of sustained teaching experience in one of the following areas – Contract, Commercial, Land, Equity.
  • Substantial experience of designing and delivering high‑quality teaching and learning material, resources and activities for students that effectively use technology where appropriate to enhance learning.
  • Supervision of undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects.
  • Experience of successful recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.
  • Evidence of developing and securing grant capture (desirable).
  • A track record of engaging with external stakeholders, generating real‑world impact from research (desirable).
  • Evidence of sustained active academic citizenship and/or strategic leadership.
  • Experience in creating and sustaining a positive and respectful workplace culture that upholds dignity, equity, and fairness for all colleagues and students.
  • A track record of mentoring and supporting the development of colleagues (both teaching and research) across career stages.

Qualifications

  • A good Honours degree in a relevant subject (essential).
  • PhD in a relevant subject (essential).
  • A relevant Professional Body Membership as appropriate to the subject area (desirable).
  • HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience) (essential).
