The Role

We are looking for a suitably qualified dentist for the post of Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry. You will be required to become actively involved in the teaching and research programmes of the School. In research, you will be expected to contribute to existing research activity in one of our current research themes (translational oral biosciences, applied oral health care or dental education), developing towards independence as a researcher. In teaching, you will be expected to contribute to academic and clinical teaching on our undergraduate clinical BDS and BSc courses and our developing portfolio of postgraduate courses. In addition, appropriately qualified candidates will have the opportunity to undertake clinical work in the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation trust.

  • Undertake teaching, course leadership and supervision of undergraduate students
  • Offer expertise in an individual’s specialist area(s)
  • Undertake teaching, leadership and supervision duties across the UG programmes
  • Undertake administrative duties as necessary, including participation in relevant School and Faculty committees and activities
  • Participate in external activity related to learning and teaching
  • Contribute to the promotion of undergraduate programmes to both current and prospective students
  • Act as an academic advisor to a small group of students
  • Contribute to University administration, course planning, curriculum development, the recruitment of students, engage in teaching and scholarly activities and course / programme leadership
  • Participate in relevant staff development activities
  • Undertake other duties, such as participation in School, Faculty and University meetings, as detailed by the Head of School.

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Detailed clinical knowledge in the field of Restorative Dentistry at a level applicable to teaching on the undergraduate BDS/BSc curriculum
  • Clinical chairside dental teaching experience in an academic setting
  • Substantial experience in leading and teaching on clinical skills courses for undergraduates
  • Evidence of leadership in an academic setting
  • Experience of undertaking research
  • Experience of preparing research proposals for submission to competitive funding organisations (e.g. NIHR and Industry)
  • Evidence of publication within peer reviewed journals
  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication about dental topics with patients and colleagues
  • Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence in restorative dentistry and provides evidence of the development of diagnostic skills and clinical judgement
  • An awareness of significant developments in restorative dentistry globally and in the UK.
  • Supervision of postgraduate students in research
  • An interest in research aligned to one of the School’s three themes

Qualifications

  • BDS Degree
  • Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC)
  • PhD or equivalent, in a topic related to dentistry or oral health that aligns to the school’s research themes
  • Eligible for honorary clinical status with the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Fellowship of HEA or equivalent and/or an academic teaching qualification.
  • Diploma or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) Membership of the Joint Faculties (MJDF) or MCGDent or equivalent
