Newcastle University is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Technology Operations to lead the delivery and continual improvement of the University’s core IT systems and platforms. Reporting to the Director of NUIT, this senior leadership role is responsible for the end‑to‑end lifecycle of technology services — from planning and design through to implementation, support and retirement — ensuring that services are resilient, secure, cost‑effective and aligned with the University’s strategic ambitions. In this role you will shape a service‑centric, product‑focused operating model that supports world‑class research, education and sustainable growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership to Technology Operations and act as a trusted advisor across the University.
  • Lead the development of the Technology Operations strategy and roadmap.
  • Oversee service management maturity and ensure governance, financial management and resource planning deliver measurable value.
  • Enable major institutional transformation programmes, including new enterprise systems, digital services and significant investment in cyber‑security and infrastructure.
  • Shape and optimise the end‑to‑end lifecycle of technology services, from planning and design through to implementation, support and retirement.
  • Build and develop high‑performing teams and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Engage with senior IT leaders (CTO, Director of Service Delivery, CISO) and external stakeholders to align technology services with the University’s strategic ambitions.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven IT leader with experience managing large, complex technology operations within a dynamic organisation.
  • Strong strategic planning capability and expertise in service management and technology transformation.
  • Ability to inspire, coach and develop high‑performing teams.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills and sound financial oversight.
  • Track record of delivering reliable, innovative and user‑focused technology services that enable organisational transformation.
