The Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Chemical Labs Technical Team Leader to support teaching and research activities in the School of Natural & Environmental Sciences. The post-holder will work under the School Technical Operations Manager to manage the chemistry labs and infrastructure within the Bedson Building, lead a team of technicians, and provide support for chemical waste disposal and key building services across the estate.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead, manage and develop a technical team, including induction, training, performance management, duty allocation, recruitment and annual leave authorisation.
- Support the School Technical Manager with planning, organisation and administration of estate and technical services, maintaining secure facility management and leading discrete estate‑related projects.
- Guarantee satisfactory maintenance, repair and calibration of all equipment and instrumentation, assist forward planning for upgrades and maintain the asset register.
- Monitor and maintain a safe working environment in line with Health and Safety guidelines, attend local safety committees.
- Maintain sound financial accounting, ensuring best‑value principles, manage recharging of technical time and stock for teaching and research when appropriate.
- Act as the chemical laboratory team leader, providing technical support for chemistry‑based teaching and research.
- Coordinate chemical waste and bottled gas, manage safe storage and disposal within SNES in conjunction with relevant staff.
- Perform any other duties within the scope of the grade as required.
The Person – Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Substantial work experience in a scientific/biological laboratory or similar environment, with a proven track record of leading a technical team.
- Deep understanding of Health and Safety in biological laboratory environments, safe use and management of category II containment facilities.
- Ability to implement and manage change, motivate and develop team members.
- Proven written and verbal communication skills.
- High‑level planning, organising and technical problem‑solving skills, proactive and innovative approach, excellent prioritisation.
- Evidence of project management and financial budgetary management experience.
- Good numerical skills, ability to analyse and present information for management.
- Experience working collaboratively with academic staff.

- Professional registration with a suitable awarding body.
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent level qualification in a relevant subject or significant vocational experience, demonstrating development through progressively more demanding, relevant roles.
