Newcastle Law School seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Property Law to join our forward thinking, inclusive Russell Group Law School that seeks to embed its values in all that it does: Challenge; Social Justice; Compassion; Wellbeing; Excellence; Responsibility; and Respect.

We are looking for someone who can contribute to the teaching of property law. An ability to contribute to the teaching of one or more of the following subjects is essential – the Law of Succession, Land Law, the Law of Equity and Trusts. The position is available on either a Teaching and Research (T&R) or a Teaching and Scholarship (T&S) basis. For those applying on the T&R track an established or emerging national/international research profile and a clear research trajectory is essential. Your research should engage with socially relevant and important questions that address current and future problems. Potential for engaging with the research funding landscape and/or potential for engagement with external stakeholders and partnerships to deliver real world impact and benefit. For those applying on the T&S track, a legal professional qualification, professional practice experience in property law broadly defined and some relevant teaching experience is essential. A commitment to embedding professional skills development in the design and assessment of one’s teaching is desirable.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide a high-quality teaching and learning experience for our students.
  • Supervise dissertation students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level (commensurate with experience).
  • Mentor and support students throughout their studies in the role of academic adviser.
  • Set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with university standards and utilise on-line and digitised curricula and education frameworks.
  • Contribute to curriculum development.
  • Provide education for life, that engages, challenges and supports our students to discover and fulfil their potential both while they are studying with us and once they have graduated.

Research (T&R track only)

  • Conduct research that demonstrates international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
  • Contribute to the research profile of Newcastle Law School by publishing high quality outputs.
  • Pursue external funding commensurate with experience.
  • Demonstrate impact by developing research-based solutions to real-world problems and engaging with external stakeholders to develop the impact of your work.
  • Supervise PGR (postgraduate research) students (commensurate with experience).

Scholarship (T&S track only)

  • Engage in subject, professional and pedagogic training, research and scholarship as required to enhance teaching and learning provision.
  • Integrate practical ‘real-world’ experience into the educational offer.
  • Support professional skills focused activities in the school.

Other

  • Operate as an active and present citizen in the Newcastle Law School community.
  • Have a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and an understanding of how individual behaviour can contribute to a positive research and education culture.
  • Undertake a range of administrative tasks to support your area of teaching, research and/or engagement.
  • Take responsibility for a defined citizenship or leadership role.
  • Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees.
  • Ability and skill to develop sustained relationships, including with internal colleagues, external partners and organisations.

The Person

The level of appointment will be determined by your ability to meet the requirements of the person specification as outlined below.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrable teaching experience and/or professional legal practice experience in the area of property law (law of succession, land law or law of equity and trusts) (essential).
  • Evidence or the potential to provide an outstanding educational experience, rooted in strong disciplinary knowledge that engages, challenges, and inspires our students.
  • Experience of or capability to publish international and world-leading research; preference will be given to candidates whose research aligns with the specified areas of teaching need (T&R track only).
  • Ability to develop and secure research funding (T&R track only).
  • Evidence of a developing national/international research profile (T&R track only).
  • Ability to supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (assessed at interview).
  • Excellent organisational, time management and presentation skills (assessed at interview).
  • Demonstration of successful team working.

In addition to providing evidence of your experience of the criteria above, to be considered for a Grade G Lectureship you must also meet the following criteria:

  • A sustained national research profile and evidence of an established/developing international research profile (T&R only).
  • Evidence of developing and securing grant capture (desirable) (T&R track only).
  • A track record of engaging with external stakeholders, generating real-world impact from research (desirable) (T&R track only).
  • Supervision of undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects.
  • Substantial experience of designing and delivering high quality teaching and learning material, resources and activities for students.
  • Ability to undertake a management and leadership role.
  • Evidence of sustained teaching or legal professional practice experience in the field of property law.
  • Ability to strengthen ties between the law school and legal practice/industry partner to enhance educational opportunities and explore potential for consultancy opportunities (T&S track).
  • Maintaining links with the legal profession and leveraging external networks to enhance the school’s reputation and student employability (T&S track).

Qualifications

  • PhD (or equivalent) at or near completion (strictly within three months of submission at time of application) in a relevant subject (T&R track); professional legal qualification (T&S track).
  • A relevant Professional Body Membership as appropriate to the subject area (Desirable).
  • HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience) (Desirable).
