The Role
You will support Lecturers in Dental Technology and Clinical academic staff in delivering teaching and training within the School of Dental Sciences. They will primarily be responsible for developing and fabricating teaching resources for the Bachelor of Dental Sciences programme. Additionally, they will support teaching by supervising and assisting undergraduate and postgraduate students in technical skills across our BDS, BSc and MClinDent programmes.
You will need to demonstrate a high level of manual dexterity and a working knowledge of technical procedures relevant to fixed and removable prosthodontics. Knowledge and experience of digital technologies would be advantageous, as CAD/CAM techniques are being incorporated into our workflows. They should have experience working effectively with a range of dental materials, possess effective communication skills, and have a proficient understanding of laboratory health and safety.
Key Accountabilities
- Responsible for managing and producing teaching resources for clinical skills courses, ensuring workload is prioritised and materials are prepared in advance to meet deadlines
- Liaise with academic staff to ensure resources are appropriate for teaching sessions and updated as necessary
- Support the delivery of teaching technical skills to students following an initial period of appropriate training and evaluation. Any instruction or supervision of students will be within the scope of practice of a Dental Technician
- Support clinical skills teaching sessions as needed, assisting with the setup of equipment and materials, and troubleshooting any faults
- Provide supervision of students conducting Diagnostic Wax ups for their patients
- Use Digital Technologies and software to design and create modern teaching resources and techniques, contributing significantly to ongoing development in this area
- Conduct basic maintenance of equipment in the skills training facilities and ensure compliance with Health and Safety standards
- Consult with suppliers and manufacturers to resolve both routine and complex problems and investigate replacement options
- Maintain stock control and place orders for laboratory materials as needed
- Maintain a Trust production laboratory attachment to develop and maintain technical skills and knowledge
- Maintain and develop skills necessary for the role through commitment to continuing professional development and by satisfying the statutory requirements of the GDC
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Theoretical and practical knowledge within the field of Dental Technology
- Skills and experience of manufacturing a variety of fixed and removable dental appliances within a Dental Laboratory
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Experience of digital technologies such as CAD/CAM relevant to Dental Technology, including knowledge of Digital workflows
- Basic understanding of Dental Materials Science (Desirable)
- Ability to contribute/suggest improvements to the design and development of teaching materials (Desirable)
- Experience in managing the maintenance of equipment and adherence to health and safety protocols within a dental laboratory environment (Desirable)

Qualifications
- BSc (Hons)/BTEC Diploma/HNC in Dental Technology or equivalent
