About the Role

We’re seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join our Legal team, providing high-quality, business-focused legal support across Newcastle United. This is a pivotal role, offering the opportunity to lead on a diverse range of legal matters, including complex commercial contracts, football regulations, and governance. You will provide clear, strategic legal advice across the Club—ensuring compliance, managing risk, and supporting key initiatives. Additionally, you will mentor and develop junior legal team members, fostering a high-performing legal function. This role sits at the intersection of sport, law, and business, giving you the chance to make an impact across all areas of the Club in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate high-value commercial agreements, including sponsorship, retail, and intellectual property contracts.
  • Advise on football regulatory matters across the Premier League, FA, UEFA, and FIFA, ensuring compliance and strategic structuring.
  • Support the General Counsel with board meetings, corporate governance, and stakeholder communication.
  • Oversee litigation management, legal risk assessment, and continuous improvement of legal processes.
  • Deliver legal training and provide guidance on key regulatory developments.
  • Contribute to strategic projects central to the Club’s growth and operations.
  • Liaise with external counsel as needed, particularly on real estate and specialist legal matters.

Your Impact

  • Qualified solicitor with approximately 6–10 years’ post-qualification experience (PQE).
  • Proven experience handling complex commercial agreements within a top-tier law firm or in-house legal team.
  • Strong expertise in football regulation and compliance frameworks.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to simplify legal concepts for various stakeholders.
  • Highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Flexible approach, including occasional weekend and out-of-hours commitments.

Location

This role is based in Newcastle upon Tyne, therefore please note, if you are not located in the Northeast and unable to relocate, we regret that we will not be able to progress your application.
