Welcome to Newcastle’s Newest Neighbourhood! Freight Island is one of the most exciting, forward‑thinking and disruptive food markets in the world. It’s a game changer, and more importantly, it has soul. We are an urban oasis blurring the lines between a food hall and a festival, where guests enjoy delicious food, great drinks, and live entertainment. We care about the details. How the space functions, how it looks, and how people move through it safely and seamlessly.

To keep this “island above the city” running perfectly, we need someone who takes pride in the fabric of the building.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Skilled Maintenance Person to join the team at Freight Island Newcastle. You’ll play a key part in ensuring our unique venue remains a high‑standard environment for our guests and partners. From rapid repairs to long‑term preventative care, you’ll help maintain the physical world of Freight Island. This role spans basic plumbing and electrical fixes to carpentry, painting, and general site upkeep. Big projects. Small fixes. All of it matters. You’ll need to be hands‑on, organised with your time, and confident handling several tasks at once. We’re building at pace, so time management and fast‑paced working is key, while keeping the standard high.

What You’ll Do

  • Execute a variety of skilled trades including basic carpentry, plumbing, and painting to maintain the venue’s aesthetic and function.
  • Work with internal teams and external contractors to bring site improvements to life.
  • Take maintenance projects from initial report through to final completion.
  • Help maintain and evolve the physical infrastructure across every guest touchpoint.
  • Conduct regular safety checks and preventative maintenance to support the wider venue strategy.
  • Take feedback on board and resolve urgent site issues quickly.

What You’ll Bring

  • Proven experience in a maintenance or facilities role, ideally within hospitality, events, or large‑scale venues.
  • A strong “portfolio” of practical skills—you are a multi‑skilled fixer who is comfortable with power tools and site machinery.
  • Confidence working across various systems, from lighting and HVAC basics to furniture and structural repairs.
  • The ability to work at pace and still keep the finish and safety standards high.
  • Confidence working with others, taking direction on board, and managing your own daily workload.
  • A genuine interest in being part of a vibrant, culture‑led environment.

What We’re Looking For

  • Proactive and full of solutions.
  • Comfortable experimenting with fixes, but know when to stick to strict safety protocols.
  • Excellent at solving problems on the fly.
  • Excited by fast‑moving, collaborative environments.

This is your chance to be part of something big. If you’re a skilled tradesperson looking to help shape one of the UK’s most exciting brands—we want to hear from you.
