About the role The Motor Transport Services Manager provides strategic and operational leadership of the Motor Transport Services (MTS) function, ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient delivery of vehicle engineering and fleet services across the airport estate. The role is critical to maintaining uninterrupted airport operations through effective maintenance, rapid response capability, and robust asset management, while meeting all regulatory and safety standards. The postholder will also lead the ongoing modernisation of MTS, driving continuous improvement, digital enablement, and the development of a skilled, high performing workforce aligned to the airport’s operational needs.

What will you be doing?

  • Lead the day-to-day delivery of all Motor Transport Services activities to ensure uninterrupted airport operations including 24/7 coverage
  • Improve structured preventative maintenance programmes to maximise asset availability and minimise unplanned downtime
  • Own and manage the departmental budget, including operational expenditure, staffing, fleet maintenance, capital programmes, and commercial revenue streams.
  • Develop long-term investment strategies for garage facilities, fleet replacement, and digital systems to support future operational needs.
  • Deliver the strategic plan for Motor Transport Services (MTS), ensuring alignment with airport-wide operational objectives.
  • Lead the modernisation of Motor Transport into MTS, stakeholder engagement, and integration with the Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Deliver a department-wide modernisation programme, including:
    • Digitisation of workflows and maintenance processes
    • Redesign of SOPs and operational standards
    • Introduction of new management systems, KPIs, and performance frameworks
    • Cultural transformation toward accountability, customer service, and commercial focus
  • Implement a workforce strategy, including:
    • Upskilling and cross-skilling programmes
    • Apprenticeship and early-career development pathways
  • Oversee full lifecycle management of all airport vehicles and specialist equipment, ensuring serviceability, regulatory compliance, and operational availability.
  • Implement fleet optimisation strategies and ensure fleet operations comply with all statutory, regulatory, and airport-specific requirements.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in large scale vehicle maintenance environments
  • Experience managing operational teams in a 24/7 environment
  • Demonstrated expertise in vehicle maintenance
  • A practical knowledge of HGVs, LGVs and Light Vehicles
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to make critical decisions under pressure
  • Aviation environment experience would be an advantage
  • Relevant qualifications in vehicle service and maintenance
