Science Technician in Newcastle upon Tyne

Part Time, Term Time – 2 days (14.4 hours) per week, term time only (plus INSET days). Salary: Grade 3 salary band FTE £27,171 - £30,720 pa; Pro rata £8,861 - £10,019 pa. Required from 1st September 2026.

We are seeking to appoint a Science Technician to join our experienced team and support the Science Department as a whole. Your role will be to co‑ordinate the use of practical resources and facilities and help meet the practical needs of the science curriculum across eight labs on a dedicated science floor.

Your main responsibilities will be to ensure the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment and to:

• Prepare, set out, test and clear away equipment, apparatus, chemicals and materials for lessons, practical sessions and activities, including cleaning work surfaces, floor areas, sinks and preparation areas, fixed and portable equipment;
• Safely dispose of waste or surplus and perishable materials;
• Return all equipment to its correct storage location; and reset adjustable items to default settings.
• Provide practical assistance to the teacher during lessons, especially where additional supervision or troubleshooting is required.
• Assist pupils in safely using equipment, chemicals and materials and undertaking practical work, give demonstrations as required and support them with the completion of practical tasks, particularly for required practicals and safe storage of items for external examination.
• Maintain protocols for standard practicals, keeping records and readings as required in accordance with departmental, school, GDST and external guidance and best practice.
• Carry out regular inspections, housekeeping and checks to ensure all standing equipment (e.g. fixed AV equipment, display screens, fume cupboards, gas guards, stills, autoclaves, dishwashers, fridges, etc.) and resources are ready for use in lessons.
