About Freight Island Newcastle’s Newest Neighbourhood! Freight Island is one of the most exciting, forward‑thinking and disruptive food markets in the world. It’s a game changer and more importantly, it has soul. Established in Manchester, Freight Island is bringing an exciting mix of culture, food, drinks and music to Newcastle. An island above the city, it blurs the lines between a food hall and a festival, reflecting the time, the demographic and the city. An urban oasis where guests can enjoy delicious food, great drinks and live entertainment.
We specialise in curating an evolving calendar of residencies and menus that span emerging local talent and nationally recognised names, keeping the experiences fresh and engaging. We care about the details. How things look. How they feel. How people move through the space, and what stays with them after they leave.
Role Overview
We are looking for an organised individual to help us with the smooth running of reservations – you will be the first person our guests interact with, and the last person they see when they leave! You will create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere where our guests can enjoy the Freight Island experience. Working in a fast‑paced environment, you must work with a sense of urgency and take pride in the levels of service you give to our customers at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- Giving guests a warm welcome and fond farewell as they enter and leave the venue – that first and last impression is everything!
- Liaising with the Security & the Management team
- Supporting the Management team in taking reservations and responding to all emails promptly and professionally
- Ensuring that walk‑ins are tracked within the reservation system
- Making sure reserved areas are spotless and ready to be used
- Creating a fun, upbeat atmosphere
- Delivering a flawless customer experience every time
- Working with the whole team to deliver the day‑to‑day running of the bar
- Collecting glasses, clearing tables and cleaning up spills
- Having full knowledge of the site including floor plans, directions, opening times, menus, events and contact information for the unit site, directors and traders
- Assisting guests in making a reservation, ensuring they know what they are booking and where
- Handling all guest questions and requests effectively
- Showing guests through to their tables, making polite chit‑chat and offering menu advice; once seated, explaining the full steps of service to guests, how to order, where the bathrooms are and answering any questions they may have; it is also our responsibility to ensure guests leave their table on time – a polite reminder 15 minutes prior
- Handling all management and staff questions and requests effectively; use of the radio to communicate with staff in a professional manner
- Assisting the Head Host / Host Supervisor in organising table plans in line with the reservations due in
- Assisting the floor staff when required – this can be at the start of shift helping to set up or during shift relaying tables; we are one team
- Checking the table plan and ensuring that tables are set accordingly (chairs neatly pushed under, matching furniture, etc.)
- Familiarising yourself with any special requests each day
- Dealing with deposits/tickets/pre‑orders and keeping the bar updated
- Ensuring all appropriate cleaning duties are carried out – the host desk should be cleared out of any rubbish at the end of every day. The office should be clean and tidy at all times
