Newcastle City Council's SEND Sensory Service is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Teacher of the Deaf to join our well-established and highly regarded team from January 2027.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a highly regarded service that was recognised during the recent Local Area SEND inspection. Inspectors highlighted the positive impact of specialist sensory services, noting that children and young people benefit from coordinated assessment and support informed by specialist expertise across education and health professionals.

The successful candidate will initially be based within one of our Primary Specialist Bases – Deafness, supporting deaf children and young people with a wide range of needs.

We are looking for an outstanding practitioner with recent mainstream teaching experience. Applications are welcomed from:

  • Qualified Teachers of the Deaf (QToD); or
  • Experienced and successful mainstream teachers who are committed to developing specialist skills and willing to undertake the two-year Mandatory Qualification in Deaf Education.

The ideal candidate will have experience of SEND leadership, including SENCo responsibilities, and a sound understanding of the SEND Code of Practice, EHCP processes and inclusive educational practice. However, applications are also welcomed from candidates who can demonstrate equivalent experience supporting children and young people with SEND.

The SEND Sensory Service offers a comprehensive induction, mentoring and professional development programme for all new staff, including those undertaking the mandatory qualification.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be an excellent classroom practitioner with high expectations for all learners.
  • Have a commitment to improving outcomes for deaf children and young people.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Work effectively in partnership with families, schools and multi-agency colleagues.
  • Be organised, adaptable and able to manage a varied workload.
  • Contribute to the continued development of an innovative and inclusive service.
