Do you want to work for a city committed to creating streets and a transport system that is inclusive, sustainable and supports a healthy, thriving city? We are looking for a Senior Transport Planner to help deliver high-quality active travel projects that put people and places at the heart of our delivery.
Transport plays a key role in shaping Newcastle’s future. As well as managing streets, paths and bridges, we design connected, accessible and sustainable transport networks that improve life for everyone who lives, works, studies or visits the city. A better-connected Newcastle helps people travel more easily and supports our ambitions for Net Zero and inclusive economic growth. We are working with the combined authority and local partners to develop a transport system that is more efficient, affordable and sustainable. This includes making it easier for people to walk, wheel, cycle and use public transport.
Active travel supports people to reach school, access parks and playgrounds, work and essential services by walking, wheeling and cycling. For the almost 40% of households who don’t have access to a vehicle in Newcastle, active travel is the main mode of travel, especially to access public transport to get to work and education that may be further afield. We manage over 1,597 km of footpaths and cycleways, and you will help maintain and improve this vital network for communities across the city.
About the Role
- Develop and support active travel infrastructure and behaviour change schemes
- Integrate active travel into a wide range of other infrastructure programmes
- Support the development and delivery of our Active Travel Action Plan, and our Local Walking and Cycling Infrastructure Plan
- Collaborate with Technical Specialists on early project development and feasibility
- Work with our engineering teams on the detailed design of new schemes
- Help deliver neighbourhood-based programmes to improve local travel choices
About You
- Passionate and knowledgeable about sustainable and active travel delivery
- Self‑motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team
- Able to manage projects professionally and on time
- Confident working collaboratively with partners, stakeholders and residents
- Skilled in communicating clearly and effectively
If you have the skills and experience listed in the job description and want to make a positive difference in Newcastle, we would love to hear from you. You will be joining a team of over 6,000 colleagues all committed to improving the city for everyone.
Benefits
- Hybrid Working: Spend part of your week at the Civic Centre (or on site) and part working from home
- Flexible Hours: Work between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Friday, with the option to build up to two additional days of leave each month
- Generous Holidays: 25 days annual leave (rising to 29 after five years), plus 8 public holidays. Additional leave options available
- Pension: Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, one of the largest and most secure schemes in the UK. More details are available in the recruitment pack
