Independent Travel Trainer (SEND) – Fixed Term (12 Months)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Newcastle City Council’s Home to School Travel Assistance Service within the SEND Transport Team. This is a fixed-term post for 12 months. The role is funded through an external funding source and is not a permanent position.

Due to the success of the existing programme, we are looking to recruit an additional Independent Travel Trainer. The role will support young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to develop the skills and confidence required to travel safely and independently using public transport.

Working as part of the SEND Transport team, you will plan, coordinate and deliver tailored travel training programmes. You will work closely with schools, families and professionals to identify suitable candidates and support young people to achieve greater independence.

The role involves direct work in the community, often on a one-to-one basis, including travel on buses, Metro and on foot. You will complete risk assessments, manage safeguarding concerns and adapt delivery to meet individual needs.

You will need experience of working with children and young people with SEND and a good understanding of safeguarding and risk management. Strong communication, organisation and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to work flexibly to meet service needs.

We are Proud, Fair and Ambitious. We are Newcastle.

We are committed to protecting and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect all staff to share this commitment. This post is working in regulated activity. If you are successful we will undertake additional recruitment checks which will include a check to see if you have had any criminal convictions, a check of police information and we will check the barred list(s). It is a criminal offence for a barred individual to apply for a job in regulated activity.
