Housing Caretaker in Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle upon Tyne Full-Time Remote

We are seeking five Housing Caretakers to join a newly established team delivering caretaking services across Newcastle City Council's low-rise and mid-rise housing stock. In addition, one position is also available in a dedicated block-based role within the city.

The team will provide a regular visible presence within approximately 2,500 council-owned buildings and partial buildings across the city, helping to maintain safe, clean and well-managed communal areas for residents.

This is a varied role with opportunities to work across different parts of the service including block-based caretaking, mobile caretaking, environmental improvement work and low-rise block inspections. While each caretaker will have a primary focus, all post holders will be expected to work flexibly across the service and undertake duties within each area as required to meet operational priorities.

Key duties will include:

  • Carrying out inspections of low-rise and other residential blocks to ensure compliance with fire safety and other health and safety requirements.
  • Maintaining a visible presence within neighbourhoods and communal housing areas.
  • Identifying, reporting and monitoring repairs, hazards and environmental concerns.
  • Inspecting communal areas, stores, service cupboards and external spaces.
  • Supporting environmental improvement initiatives to enhance the appearance and condition of estates and neighbourhoods.
  • Reporting and addressing fly-tipping, bulk waste, graffiti and other environmental issues.
  • Delivering cleaning and caretaking services within communal areas where required.
  • Supporting property clearances, remedial cleans and other tenancy-related environmental work.
  • Working collaboratively with housing management, repairs, compliance and neighbourhood teams.

The four mobile roles require travelling to multiple locations throughout the working day. A full UK driving licence is therefore essential for the mobile positions.

Successful applicants will be expected to work independently, manage their workload effectively and contribute towards service targets relating to property inspections and service delivery. These are physically active roles involving walking, stair climbing and manual handling. This is an opportunity to join a new team that will play an important role in improving the appearance, safety and management of communal housing areas across the city.

At Newcastle City Council, we are Proud, Fair and Ambitious. If you share these values and are passionate about leading services that have a real impact on people's lives, we'd love to hear from you.
