Our aim is, wherever possible, to prevent homelessness at the earliest stage by helping residents to maintain the foundations for a stable life: somewhere to live, an income, financial inclusion and employment opportunities. The role of the Homelessness Prevention Officer is to find homelessness prevention and relief options for residents at risk by working collaboratively with housing and homelessness services and other relevant partners. You will be joining an award-winning team recently recognised at the Staff Star awards 2025. This role can be demanding but rewarding, providing a real opportunity to help people to access the services they require.

A key part of this role is to carry out statutory homeless assessments making appropriate enquiries to inform decisions in line with national legislation and local policy aims and to determine the available options for the individual. You will need to have a good understanding of the issues surrounding homelessness and its prevention, along with IT and case recording and coordination skills. The ability to solve problems within the context of the Council’s policies and legal duties, manage a caseload and meet deadlines as well as being able to work on your own initiative and as part of the team is essential. You will also need to be able to negotiate and communicate empathetically with people whilst being sensitive to different life experiences.

  • Find homelessness prevention and relief options for residents at risk by working with housing and homelessness services and partners.
  • Carry out statutory homeless assessments with appropriate enquiries to inform decisions in line with national legislation and local policy aims.
  • Determine available options for the individual based on assessment outcomes.
  • Manage a caseload, meet deadlines, and work on own initiative as well as part of a team.
  • Negotiate and communicate empathetically with people while being sensitive to different life experiences.

Qualifications:

  • Good understanding of issues surrounding homelessness and its prevention.
  • IT and case recording/coordination skills.
  • Ability to solve problems within the Council’s policies and legal duties.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
