Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) is one of the very best colleges in the country. In October 2024 we became the first and only further education provider in England to achieve a full set of outstanding grades in consecutive Ofsted Inspections. The inspection report praised all areas of the College's provision and acknowledged NSCG's staff are professional, friendly, incredibly supportive and work tirelessly to meet the needs of learners.

In summary, NSCG is a great place to work and study. The group is currently home to a population of over 6,500 full-time students with around 2000 adult learners and students on higher education programmes. We have over 1,500 apprentices where we work with over 850 individual employers. Our Sixth Form provision has a reputation for high academic achievement and excellence.

Based in various curriculum areas across the whole organisation (Newcastle and Stafford), we are looking for enthusiastic, suitably qualified individuals to support students and measure the impact of tutorials, through identification of student strengths, aspirations and needs. You will agree and monitor targets to facilitate progress in both academic and personal goals, relative to their starting point.

In addition to those with existing tutoring experience, this position would also suit someone currently working in a Teaching Assistant role and/or recent graduates who are considering a career in teaching. You will deliver a variety of group tutorials that will support the students with their personal development and wellbeing. It is this holistic and varied support that will be crucial to improving students' confidence in their next steps.

The College considers its tutorial system to be a vital element in the support, engagement and retention of students. As a Personal Tutor you will be a central contact for the student and will actively promote pastoral support from enrolment and right through to the end of the student journey. Along with the curriculum team, you will enable a supportive transition and induction process through contact with students and parents. This will be facilitated by your use of the College monitoring system.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To make contact with parents/guardians/carers of tutees within the first 6 weeks of the new academic year and throughout the course, to introduce your role, discuss progress, issues and attendance etc.
  • To effectively utilise the College monitoring system to implement appropriate support and take action at an early stage.
  • To provide support to students with personal, domestic or social difficulties and where appropriate to signpost them to additional support within or outside the College.
  • To promote effective achievement and retention through the target setting and review process using their ILP (Individual Learning Plan) and through effective 1:1s.
  • To conduct effective tutorial activities.
  • To promote acceptable learner behaviour, attendance, punctuality and progress.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Experience of working in a tutor capacity role or equivalent (Desirable).
  • Holds English & Maths GCSE or equivalent.
  • Is able to develop a good rapport with 16 - 19 year old learners both in a group situation and on a one to one basis.
  • Experience of working with Higher Education / UCAS application processes (Desirable).

What's in it for you?

The college offers an excellent benefits package which includes: Employer Pension contributions - up to £7,140 pro rata (LGPS) 25 days (pro rata) annual leave per year, rising to 30 following 5 years' service.
