Engineering Technician - Site Investigations
Full time | Guildford, Surrey | Site-based work across the UK
About NEAT
Newby Engineering and Technology (NEAT) is a specialist engineering consultancy providing engineering investigation, testing and technical support to clients across a range of industries.
Much of our work involves getting out on site to understand what has happened, gathering reliable evidence and carrying out practical testing and investigation. We are looking for a hands-on Engineering Technician to support our engineers and consultants with this work.
The Role
This is a practical, varied role for someone who enjoys being out on site, working with equipment and solving real-world problems.
You will primarily support our senior engineers and consultants on site visits, surveys and engineering investigations. Working under their supervision, you will help carry out inspections and testing, take measurements, collect and label samples, photograph and document findings, and make sure that accurate records are captured while on site.
When you are not on site, you will support the team with preparation for upcoming investigations, equipment and sample management, basic laboratory work and processing the information collected during site visits.
The role will involve regular travel to client sites across the UK, and some projects may require early starts or overnight stays.
What You'll Be Doing
Your work is likely to include:
- Attending client sites alongside engineers and consultants.
- Assisting with engineering investigations, condition surveys and inspections.
- Carrying out testing and measurements under the supervision of an engineer.
- Operating inspection, monitoring and test equipment following appropriate training.
- Taking clear, systematic photographs and maintaining accurate site records.
- Recording measurements, observations and test results.
- Identifying, labelling and collecting samples for further investigation or laboratory testing.
- Assisting with installation and retrieval of monitoring equipment.
- Preparing tools, equipment and documentation ahead of site visits.
- Checking, maintaining and organising site and test equipment.
- Supporting laboratory testing and sample preparation when required.
- Transferring and organising photographs, measurements and other information following site work.
- Following site-specific risk assessments, method statements and health and safety requirements.
- Supporting the wider engineering team with practical project work as required.
About You
We are looking for someone who is practical, dependable and comfortable working in a hands-on environment.
You don't need to be an experienced engineer. What matters to us is that you have a good understanding of fundamental scientific principles, can work methodically, follow instructions, use practical equipment confidently and collect information accurately.
You will ideally have:
- Good practical and mechanical aptitude.
- Strong attention to detail.
- A methodical and organised approach to work.
- Confidence using hand tools and practical equipment.
- Good basic numeracy and IT skills.
- The ability to record observations and measurements accurately.
- A sensible and proactive approach to health and safety.
- Good communication skills and the confidence to work professionally at client sites.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a small team.
- A willingness to learn new equipment, techniques and testing methods.
- A full UK driving licence.
- The flexibility to travel regularly and occasionally stay away from home.
Experience That Would Be Useful
Previous experience in any of the following would be an advantage, but isn't essential:
- Engineering or construction.
- Building surveys or site inspections.
- Materials testing or investigation.
- Laboratory or workshop environments.
- Site-based technical work.
- Using measurement, inspection or monitoring equipment.
- Construction sites or industrial environments.
Relevant technical qualifications, apprenticeships or practical experience would all be welcomed. We're more interested in finding someone with the right practical ability, attitude and attention to detail than someone who ticks every box on paper.
Salary & Benefits
- Β£30,000-Β£35,000 per annum, depending on experience
- 28 days' annual leave plus bank holidays
- Company pension
- All reasonable business travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses covered
- Mileage reimbursed at the prevailing HMRC approved rate where use of a personal vehicle is authorised
- TOIL arrangements for significant business travel outside normal working hours
- PPE, specialist equipment and work-related training provided
- Training in specialist engineering investigation, inspection and testing techniques
- Opportunities to develop your technical skills and take on greater responsibility as your experience grows
- A varied role working alongside experienced engineers on interesting, real-world engineering investigations
Why Join NEAT?
This isn't a role where every day looks the same. One week you might be helping investigate a problem with a building or construction material; another could involve setting up monitoring equipment, taking samples or assisting with testing back at our Guildford base.
You'll work closely with experienced engineers, learn specialist investigation and testing techniques, and gain exposure to a wide variety of engineering problems.
As a small and growing consultancy, we're looking for someone who wants to become an important part of the team and develop with us.
Regular UK travel and occasional overnight stays are an important part of the role, so we're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys the variety that comes with site-based work.
