Newbury Commercial Glazing Ltd is a well-established, family-run commercial glazing specialist with over 25 years of excellence in the industry. Based in Warwick, we serve commercial, public sector, and educational clients across the Midlands and beyond. We are approved fabricators for major suppliers including Smart Systems, Schueco and Senior Aluminium Systems. With current annual turnover of approximately £2.7M and ambitious growth plans, we are at an exciting transformation stage.

ROLE PURPOSE

The Financial Controller is a senior leadership position with accountability spanning four critical functions: Finance, HR, Operations Support, and Strategic Planning. This is not a traditional finance-only role; it requires a commercially astute, hands-on leader who can drive business performance while building robust systems and processes to support our ambitious growth trajectory. You will be the Directors key business partner, translating strategic vision into operational reality through financial control, people management, process improvement, and data-driven insight. This role offers exceptional visibility, autonomy, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on a growing business. Previous experience within a family-owned or owner-managed business/s is extremely valuable.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare accurate monthly management accounts with variance analysis and actionable commentary
  • Oversee full accounting cycle including sales ledger, purchase ledger, and general ledger
  • Manage balance sheet reconciliation, fixed asset register, and depreciation schedules
  • Input and reconcile purchase invoices against NCG stock system
  • Process sales invoice entry into Sage accounting system
  • Reconcile and process all credit card transactions into Sage
  • Assist with providing the information for the preparation of statutory accounts and coordinate with external accountants
  • Deliver comprehensive board reports with KPI dashboards and strategic financial insights
  • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations, tax requirements, VAT, PAYE, and CIS

Cash Flow & Working Capital Management

  • Daily cash flow management and 90-day rolling cash flow forecasting
  • Optimise working capital across multiple revenue channels and project types
  • Manage debtor relationships and credit control to maintain healthy cash position
  • Oversee supplier payment schedules and negotiate favourable payment terms
  • Monitor project WIP (Work in Progress) and application values

Budgeting, Forecasting & Strategic Planning

  • Lead annual budgeting process aligned with growth strategy
  • Develop financial models for domestic market entry, trade supply only scaling, and potential M&A scenarios
  • Provide scenario planning for capacity expansion and capital investment decisions
  • Support business valuation work and due diligence preparation for potential acquisition opportunities
  • Monitor Business Asset Disposal Relief implications and tax optimisation strategies
  • Coordinate and support R&D tax credit claims with specialist advisors

Project & Cost Accounting

  • Manage project-level profitability analysis across commercial, Small and Reactive Works, and Trade Supply Only channels
  • Produce detailed job costing reports showing profit/loss for every project and small works file
  • Track and report margin performance by project type, client, and business unit
  • Implement cost control mechanisms and overhead allocation methodologies
  • Work closely with estimators and project managers on pricing decisions and risk assessment
  • Analyse seasonality patterns and develop capacity utilisation strategies
  • Lead financial aspects of Microsoft Dynamics 365 CRM implementation
  • Ensure CRM captures all KPI data points required for performance management
  • Coordinate integration between CRM, LogiKal quoting and manufacturing software, and accounting systems
  • Design and implement automated dashboards for real-time business intelligence
  • Champion data quality and CRM adoption across the organisation

HR & People Management

  • Oversee recruitment processes including job specifications, interviewing, and onboarding
  • Conduct employee inductions and ensure completion of all onboarding documentation
  • Manage employee contracts, payroll administration (weekly wages and monthly salaries), and HR compliance
  • Administer all staff information and files, ensuring secure storage of necessary documentation
  • Coordinate ID card production for all staff members
  • Organise and maintain all Health & Safety training schedules (monthly)
  • Manage DBS check processes including verification and renewal (every 3 years)
  • Support succession planning and organisational development
  • Ensure employment law compliance and manage employee relations matters

Compliance, Certifications & Licensing

  • Manage all ISO certification processes including ongoing administration and annual audits
  • Maintain and renew industry certifications (Constructionline Gold, CHAS, Safe Contractor)
  • Complete and submit Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) applications for tender opportunities
  • Update certification platforms with required documentation, policies, and insurance information
  • Renew various operational licences as required (e.g., Waste Licence, Data Protection Certificate)
  • Ensure all compliance documentation meets legal requirements and industry standards

Strategic Business Partnership

  • Serve as strategic advisor to Directors and senior leadership team
  • Translate financial data into actionable business insights for non-finance stakeholders
  • Support partnership evaluation and management (CRM partners, marketing agencies)
  • Contribute to strategic decision-making on market entry, pricing, and investment
  • Maintain confidentiality on sensitive matters including acquisition interest and succession planning

General Administration

  • Coordinate office administration and procurement of stationery and supplies
  • Maintain organised filing systems for financial and operational documentation
  • Support operational efficiency through effective administrative processes

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Background in family-owned or owner-managed businesses
  • Minimum 5 years post-qualification experience in financial management roles
  • Proven experience in construction, manufacturing, or project-based SME environments (£2M-£10M turnover)
  • Hands-on experience with management accounts, statutory accounts, and financial reporting
  • Strong understanding of project costing, WIP accounting, and margin analysis
  • Experience with CIS (Construction Industry Scheme), VAT, and construction-specific taxation
  • Practical experience with Sage accounting software or similar ERP systems
  • Advanced Excel skills with demonstrated financial modelling capability

Highly Desirable

  • ACA, ACCA, or CIMA qualified accountant
  • Experience implementing or working with Microsoft Dynamics 365 or similar enterprise CRM systems
  • Previous involvement in business growth, transformation, or scale-up initiatives
  • M&A due diligence experience or business valuation knowledge
  • HR generalist experience including recruitment, contracts, and performance management
  • Familiarity with ISO certification processes and compliance management
  • Experience with industry certification schemes (Constructionline, CHAS, Safe Contractor)
  • Understanding of glazing, fenestration, construction supply chain, or related sectors
