Southwark Council is seeking two Environmental Health Officers to support its Commercial Services Unit with food safety and wider environmental health duties. You’ll play a key role in protecting public health, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering high‑quality, customer‑focused services across the borough. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified EHOs looking to contribute to a high‑performing, forward‑thinking regulatory team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out food safety inspections, interventions and enforcement in line with statutory requirements.
  • Maintain awareness of service standards, performance targets and quality frameworks, contributing to continuous improvement.
  • Undertake research, consultation and reporting on environmental health matters.
  • Respond flexibly to service needs, using available technology to improve efficiency and outcomes.
  • Promote and uphold equal opportunities, customer care and diversity principles.
  • Work in accordance with Health & Safety legislation and council policies, encouraging safe practice across the service.
  • Support an open, collaborative and innovative team culture where staff feel involved and supported.

About You

  • A recognised Environmental Health qualification (EHRB registration or equivalent).
  • Strong knowledge of food safety legislation, enforcement powers and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience delivering inspections, investigations and enforcement within a local authority or similar setting.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and meet performance targets.
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence engaging with businesses, partners and the public.
  • A proactive, flexible and solutions‑focused approach to service delivery.
