Neway International are seeking a Health and Safety Advisor to join our client based with London Borough of Islington.
Location: 222 Upper Street, Islington
Hours: 35 per week

The Corporate Health and Safety Team plays a vital role in supporting the council’s mission to embed a proactive safety culture, ensuring compliance with legislation and promoting best practice across all services. This role supports the council’s corporate gap analysis and compliance programme, ensuring Islington meets its statutory duties under Health and Safety law. As a Health and Safety Advisor, you will provide expert advice, conduct audits, develop policies, and support managers in embedding safe systems of work. You will work across a wide range of services, contributing to risk assessments, training, monitoring and continuous improvement activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the development of a positive, proactive health and safety culture across the council.
- Advise managers and staff on health and safety duties, compliance requirements and best practice.
- Develop, review and promote corporate safety policies, procedures and management systems.
- Conduct audits, inspections and risk assessments, producing clear action plans and recommendations.
- Monitor performance, analyse data and report on safety trends, risks and emerging issues.
- Prepare and deliver training to managers and employees on key health and safety topics.
- Produce concise reports, policies and guidance documents for varied audiences.
- Engage effectively with stakeholders including managers, head teachers, trade unions and enforcement bodies.
- Support corporate and departmental health and safety committees.
- Contribute to emergency planning, safe working practices and environmental monitoring.
- Assist with the coordination of the council’s drug and alcohol testing programme, including occasional out-of-hours work.
- Maintain professional development and ensure up-to-date knowledge of legislation and standards.
Candidate Requirements
- Certified Member of IOSH (CertIOSH) or TechIOSH working towards Graduate Membership, with substantial progress toward a Level 6 qualification (Essential).
- NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 5/6, NCRQ Diploma, or equivalent (Essential).
- Experience working in a health and safety environment within a local authority or similar organisation (Essential).
- Strong knowledge of current health and safety legislation, fire safety and preventative measures (Essential).
- Experience conducting inspections, audits, risk assessments and accident investigations (Essential).
- Ability to analyse data, identify risks and produce clear recommendations (Essential).
- Skilled in preparing reports, policies and procedures, and presenting information effectively (Essential).
- Strong stakeholder engagement, negotiation and influencing skills (Essential).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and digital systems for managing H&S information (Essential).
- Ability to plan and prioritise workloads independently (Essential).
- Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional evenings/weekends (Essential).
