Job description

Accountant

Permanent

37 hours per week

Salary NS11 £40,444 to £42,123 per annum

We have a new vacancy within our busy but friendly Financial Services Team. Reporting to the Principal Accountant, you will work closely with our HRA Budget Managers to set and monitor budgets, and you will complete the Councils monthly VAT return. You will also assist with the preparation of the council’s annual Statement of Accounts and support with the wider activities of the Financial Services section

Experience of working in a local government finance team and Housing Revenue Account understanding would be beneficial, but not essential, but you should have worked within a finance environment. You will have good numerical skills and be highly PC literate. You will be able to prioritise workloads whilst meeting strict deadlines, work with minimal supervision and communicate financial information to all levels of staff.

In recent years, the Council has transformed the way it works in response to financial challenges from reductions in funding. Rather than just focussing on cutting spending, we have reshaped the organisation to make it more business focussed and introduced different delivery vehicles to deliver efficiencies and improve performance. By doing so we have created a strong financial position with a flexible and dedicated workforce to deliver to Newark and Sherwood residents the excellent Council services they deserve.

Hybrid working is available for this role, working from our offices in Newark two days per week, with some flexibility in working hours.

We’re an ambitious, forward-thinking Council with strong values and a culture of doing our absolute best to serve our customers. We are proud of our organisational culture and receive positive feedback from our employees. We have a programme of internal activity to ensure that the voices of our employees are always heard and that they are kept informed on all Council activity and events. From roadshows to an annual award ceremony, from reviewing working arrangements to regular craft sessions, it is incredibly important our employees are shown how valued they are and that they remain the beating heart of our workplace.

We offer:

  • Enrolment in the career average local government pension scheme.
  • Flexi scheme.
  • A generous annual leave entitlement that increases with service.
  • Family-friendly benefits.
  • One days’ paid volunteering leave.
  • Lifestyle benefits platform.
  • Funded health cash plan.
  • Free car parking to 31 March 2028
  • £10 a month gym membership at one of our gyms in the district.

For an informal chat or more information, please contact Andrew Snape, Head of Finance on 01636 655523 or Jenna Norton, Principal Accountant on 01636 655327.

As an employer we will promote an inclusive working environment to maintain and develop a forward thinking and diverse workforce.

Veterans/family of forces/ex-forces, those in care/care leavers, and candidates who declare disabilities (as defined by the Equality Act 2010) will be guaranteed interviews provided they have demonstrated that they meet the criteria of the post as detailed in the Person Specifications on their application forms.

We will not accept CVs from unsolicited recruitment agencies.

We recommend you submit your application early, as we often receive a large number of applications and therefore we reserve the right to close the advert early

Closing Date:Sunday 15 th November

Interview:w/c 23 rd or 30 th November
