Duties include responding to emergency callouts within 1 hour during inclement weather, including snow and ice conditions. Tasks involve manual labor in various weather conditions, operating plows during winter, roadside maintenance, drainage, traffic control, and other assigned duties. Overtime and shift work are required, and leave is subject to operational needs. Candidates may serve in the Incident Command System during emergency responses.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1: Must be 18+, pass physical/medical and drug tests, possess a Class D Driver License.
- Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: Must be 18+, pass physical/medical and drug tests, possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction, and demonstrate ability to operate a large NYSDOT dump truck within two weeks.
- Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Completion of Trainee 2 or one year of relevant experience with specific licenses and certifications, including heavy dump truck, plowing, and front-end loader. Must complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification within two weeks of employment.
All candidates must pass pre-employment physical/medical and drug tests. Cannabis use is prohibited, and testing may lead to disqualification or removal from employment. Candidates with a valid CDL A or B and a recent Medical Certificate may bypass certain physical requirements, details to be discussed at interview.
