Join us in our mission to transform bioprocess optimisation, to unleash the power of biotech to create a greener future today!
About us
We develop downstream process optimisation software to accelerate the R&D and reduce product costs of alternative proteins and other sustainable bioproducts.
SynBio has the potential to transform global supply chains with the sustainable production of food, chemicals, materials and more, but 90% of these technologies fail to scale because of high production costs and long R&D timelines. That’s why we founded New Wave Biotech – we develop software that uses computational modelling to conduct virtual experimentation on billions of potential processes, to help sustainable alt protein companies optimise their production for cost, quality and sustainability.
We’re a mission driven company working in a new industry where a lot is unknown. We aren’t afraid of the ambiguity and relish the opportunity to pave a path. To navigate this adventure, we’re building a culture where each person has the freedom to approach things their way, be open and honest without being afraid to admit when they don’t know something, and work collaboratively with others to solve problems together. Diversity is core to our values, not just because of our founders’ personal backgrounds, but also because we see the importance of having varying perspectives in complex problem solving. For that reason, flexibility is key to us – we don\'t mind how you work or what hours you keep, as long as you get the job done!
We’re an ambitious, fast-paced startup. Since founding the company three years ago, our product’s been recognised by leading industry organisations as a pioneering innovation. With this recognition has come growing demand, and we’re now looking to expand the team to take on new and bigger projects! We’re now hiring a Backend Software Engineer to join our team to develop and improve our bioprocess models and help us accelerate our growth.
The Role
As a Backend Software Engineer, you’ll help create the core algorithms and models that power our web-based bioprocess optimisation platform. This includes:
- Contributing to key architectural decisions about our back-end systems
- Ensuring we produce accurate and repeatable results, balancing a vast array of factors and interlaced dynamics to model bioprocessing
- Working closely with our bioprocess engineers to implement and improve the bioprocess models at the heart of our platform
- Collaborating with the rest of the development team to ensure our platform is fast, easy-to-use and accurate
- Proactively identifying and integrating new sources of data to further enhance our platform’s capabilities
- Contributing to basic front-end development where needed
- Taking full ownership of features — from design and implementation through testing and deployment — with a high degree of autonomy and responsibility
We’re an early-stage startup, which means we move fast and cover many different areas. This is a great opportunity to pick up new skills and develop fast, to own and take responsibility for new features, have a meaningful impact on our product and direction, and grow with the company. We don’t assume you’ll know all of the frameworks and tools we use (although it’s definitely a bonus if you do), but hope you’ll be excited by the prospect of picking them up and learning as you go!
Job requirements
Required qualifications:
- 3+ years experience building APIs and back-end services in Python on the cloud (familiarity with GCP or Azure is a bonus, but not required)
- Passionate for building scalable and performant services
- Interest in or experience with implementing (bio)process models in software
About you:
- Enjoy technical challenges and complex analytical systems
- Looking for independent, proactive work with a sense of responsibility
- Enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary team and finding solutions together
- Enjoy learning and pick up complex topics fast
- Have interest in the alt protein and new foods industry, and its sustainability impact
Bonus points:
- Degree in biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, process engineering, biotechnology or other bioprocessing-relevant experience
- DevOps/MLOps experience, particularly deploying, running and administering compute-heavy and ML-based workloads on GCP
- Experience with numpy, Pandas or FastAPI (or similar Python-based API framework)
- Knowledge of Nuxt or Vue.js
- Knowledge of or interest in computational process modelling
- Experience with optimisation
Why work with us:
- We are a young and dynamic startup, revolutionising bioprocess design and optimisation. We function with a flat hierarchy. The teams’ success will be the company’s success.
- Make your mark and grow with us – as one of the early employees, your work has a great influence on the growth of our company and you’ll have a lot of opportunities to grow as we scale.
- Flexible working hours and location – Our team is fully remote with a budget for co-working and the option of hybrid working from a co-working space in London.
- 25 days holiday.
- A competitive salary package including stock options.
- Our founders don’t look like typical tech founders, and we don’t expect you to either. We encourage people from all backgrounds, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, or gender identity to apply.
