The Role

We are seeking an experienced and values-driven Financial Director (FD) to play a pivotal leadership role at a key moment in our national journey. The FD will be a key member of our National Leadership Team, with a reporting line agreed based on organisational needs and experience. This role combines strategic leadership with hands-on oversight, ensuring financial sustainability, compliance, and excellence while supporting local churches and ministries across a diverse, decentralised organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership
    • Lead financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning
    • Advise senior leaders and Trustees on financial performance, sustainability, and risk
    • Oversee reserves, treasury management, and cashflow planning
  • Operational Finance & Governance
    • Oversee monthly and quarterly management accounts
    • Lead day-to-day finance operations, including income, expenditure, reconciliations
    • Ensure accurate payroll and pension processing
    • Maintain robust internal controls and financial systems
    • Lead preparation of statutory accounts in line with Charity SORP (FRS 102)
    • Manage the annual audit and liaise with external auditors and regulators
  • Support to Local Churches
    • Provide training, guidance, and financial capacity-building to local churches and departments
    • Develop accessible financial templates, guidance, and compliance resources
    • Promote best practice across the organisation
  • Leadership & Team Development
    • Lead and develop the national finance team
    • Drive improvements in systems, reporting, and use of technology

Person Specification

Essential

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACCA, ACA, CIMA or equivalent)
  • Significant senior finance leadership experience (FD, CFO, Head of Finance)
  • Strong knowledge of Charity SORP (FRS 102)
  • Experience of strategic planning, budgeting, forecasting, and audit
  • Experience of payroll, pensions, Gift Aid, restricted funds, and charity tax
  • Proven ability to strengthen governance and financial controls
  • Experience leading and developing high-performing teams
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-finance leaders
