We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Trainee Building Control Surveyor to join Westmorland and Furness Council’s Building Control Service, a vital team ensuring that new developments across the area are safe, sustainable, and fully compliant with the Building Regulations and the Building Safety Act. Our Building Control Service plays a key role in safeguarding the built environment, ensuring buildings are constructed to the highest safety and quality standards, while also managing the Council’s responsibilities for dangerous structures and enforcement.
As a Trainee Building Control Surveyor, you’ll support the day-to-day work of the service while following a structured development programme designed to help you build the knowledge, skills, and qualifications needed to become a fully qualified Building Control professional. Working closely with experienced surveyors, you’ll assist with plan assessments, site inspections, and customer enquiries, gaining hands-on experience across residential, commercial, and industrial projects. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to combine professional development with meaningful, real-world impact on local communities.
Key priorities include:
- Assisting in the assessment of building regulation applications under supervision.
- Supporting site inspections to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

Who we are looking for…
We’re looking for an ambitious and committed individual with a genuine interest in construction, building standards, and public safety. You’ll be eager to learn, enjoy problem-solving, and have the drive to develop into a qualified Building Control professional. You will have a degree or equivalent qualification (or be working towards one) in Building Surveying, Construction, Architectural Technology, or a related field, or relevant professional experience in the construction or regulatory environment.
You will also bring:
- A strong interest in the built environment and regulatory compliance.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A positive, professional attitude and a willingness to learn from experienced colleagues.
- Basic IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office and digital case management systems.
