The only way to achieve the very best education for all Somerset’s children and young people, wherever they live and whatever their needs, is through collaboration. In a large county with some long-standing structural challenges, this will always be a big job; but we’re making steady progress across a range of priorities, including SEND reform, and we’re looking for someone with wide experience, comprehensive whole-system knowledge and an inclusive vision of education who can continue and accelerate our improvement journey. You’ll lead and influence across the county, working closely with council colleagues and wider system partners.

Able to lead both day-to-day delivery and long-term transformation with confidence, you’ll act as a beacon of quality, innovation and partnership. Your track record will include setting and delivering high standards, working effectively through partnerships, and promoting a positive culture of aspiration. A nuanced grasp of commissioning, astute commercial skills, and an understanding of how to sustain strong financial performance are all essential. Skilled at engaging with partners, and bringing disparate audiences together in service of high-quality provision, you’ll have the personal optimism and resilience to address complex issues and secure successful outcomes.
