This role sits within the Attendance Compliance Team and focuses on intensive, well‑documented family support to remove barriers to regular school attendance, including the use of Education Supervision Orders (ESOs). The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the statutory framework underpinning the local authority's role in attendance concerns and experience in building relationships with children, families, schools and partners to identify barriers and develop action plans.
Accountabilities
- Utilise specialist skills to meet statutory responsibilities for children failing to attend school regularly.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to key stakeholders and families to ensure vulnerable children's educational needs are met.
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders and partners to prioritise school attendance for vulnerable children.
- Ensure all interactions are captured in a court‑suitable format.
- Develop solution‑focused plans with robust directions and deadlines for all parties to improve pupil attendance.
- Collaborate with colleagues to progress cases and achieve desired outcomes.
- Challenge schools and families where pupils are prevented from accessing education, highlighting obstacles and instigating plans to overcome barriers.
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, equality and anti‑discrimination legislation, and robust processes for managing concerns and complaints.
- Define specific individual and shared targets and objectives annually within the performance management framework.
The experience you will bring
- Degree level education in a relevant subject area or equivalent experience.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development and expert knowledge in the relevant field.
- Ability to interpret information and data to achieve positive outcomes and improve standards.
- Significant experience in an education environment, demonstrating knowledge of the work involved in ensuring families understand the importance of attendance.
- Experience managing workload and change in a complex environment.
- Experience delivering public services in a multi‑stakeholder environment.
- Strong communication skills, empathy, negotiation, and the ability to hold key partners to account.
Eligibility and requirements
- Must have a valid driving licence and access to a vehicle or alternative means to meet the mobility requirements of the role.
- May be required to register with the DBS update service if the role requires a DBS check.
- The role requires the post holder to be mobile throughout the operational area.
