Overview
The Revenues service forms part of the larger customer focused Customer, Revenues & Welfare and Benefits service. The Revenues service has a clear purpose to deliver the billing, collection and recovery of Council Tax and Business Rates due to the local authority to enable it to deliver services to residents.
Role summary As a Revenues Officer you will assist in maximising the revenue generated from the accurate billing and collection of Council Tax and Business Rates. You would be expected to engage with customers and service users on a regular basis, understand and correctly interpret policies, procedures and legislation and be able to identify the needs/requirements of customers which could be of a sensitive or complex nature. As a Business Rate and Valuation specialist you would also be involved in ensuring the accuracy of the Council Tax and Non-Domestic Rate lists.
Responsibilities
- Effectively manage customer enquiries. These could be face to face, over the telephone or electronically.
- To understand the legislation, policies and procedures relevant to the service to ensure accurate information is given to customers.
- Maintain and complete accurate customer records to allow the accurate billing and collection of charges.
- You will be required to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers and challenge information provided, when appropriate, in a professional manner.
- Manage your individual workload, ensuring key performance indicators & service targets regarding customer service, accuracy and collection rates are met.
- Assist with the discovery of new properties and changes to existing hereditaments to accurately maintain the Council Tax and Non-Domestic Rate lists.

- Strong customer service experience, with the ability to have difficult conversations and manage customer complaints professionally and appropriately.
- Excellent communication skills in all areas, with the ability to remain firm yet empathetic recognising and understanding the feelings and concerns of others.
- Highly motivated and not easily discouraged, working within a pressured environment.
- A basic knowledge of Council Tax and Business Rates and the role of the Valuation Office.
- The ability to understand legislation and guidance, with a commitment to personal learning.
- To be able to plan, prioritise and organise your workload to meet the needs of the team and ensure all deadlines met.
- Good computer literacy skills.
