We are looking for an enthusiastic, committed and preferably experienced receptionist to join our existing team. Applicants must be able to provide a caring, professional and efficient service to our patients.

Hours of duty: 24 per week:

  • Thursday 8am-1pm & 2pm-6.30pm
  • Friday 8am-1pm & 2pm-6.30pm

Applicants must be flexible as it is a condition of employment that additional hours are worked during periods of annual leave or sickness. There will also be a requirement to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Main duties of the job:

A medical receptionist in a GP surgery is the first point of contact for patients. They manage appointments, handle phone and in-person enquiries, update patient records, and pass messages to clinical staff. They also support the smooth running of the practice by dealing with prescriptions, referrals, and administrative tasks, while maintaining patient confidentiality and professionalism.

Job responsibilities:

  • Greet and direct patients on arrival.
  • Book appointments.
  • Deal with telephone enquiries.
  • Order emergency transport for patients and advise patients how to book transport for routine appointments.
  • Administration tasks such as photocopying and ordering stock.
  • Cover any necessary duties that may arise due to the absence of other staff members.
  • Act as chaperone in the absence of the practice nurse.
  • Opening and closing the premises.
  • Any other duties as directed by the partners or practice manager.

Person Specification:

Knowledge and skills:

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Keyboard and computer skills.
  • Accurate presentation of work.

Qualifications:

  • GCSE Grade 5 or above in English or an equivalent qualification.
  • GCSE Grade 5 or above in Maths or an equivalent qualification.

Experience:

  • Experience of dealing with the public.
  • Experience within a medical reception environment is desirable but not essential.

Qualities and attributes:

  • Understanding, acceptance and adherence to the need for strict confidentiality.
  • Pleasant and articulate.
  • Patient and diplomatic.
  • Able to work as part of a team.
