New Reflexions is a well-established, specialist, independent provider of high-quality services for young people in therapeutic residential care/education. The Clinical Services Department sits at the heart of an integrated model of intervention stretching across care, education, psychology, and therapy. The Clinical Services Department is well resourced and has a dedicated suite of therapy rooms. We provide access to supervision, and ongoing professional development.

The current team includes Art Psychotherapy, Counselling Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and an Assistant Psychologist. We are currently looking for a Speech and Language Therapist to join our Clinical Team at our Head Office, Shrewsbury. The candidate will provide Speech and Language assessment, consultation and oversight across our Learning Disability and Autism services.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • To support the development of communication friendly environments across education and care settings, through the assessment and development of all associated means of communication; to include signs, symbols, photos, objects of reference and technology (where appropriate).
  • Staff training and consultation as part of staff induction and ongoing clinical support and guidance in the use and implementation of communication aids.
  • To work closely with Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Education and care to contribute to Multi-Disciplinary formulations and care plans to ensure appropriate communication targets are being set and that the support is available to the children to help them achieve them.
  • To support the review and development of appropriate EHCP targets and ensure these are embedded into their 24 hour curriculum.
  • To provide individualised assessment of the communication needs of all children, alongside ongoing monitoring and support according to that child’s individual needs.
  • To ensure that care and education settings follow the 5 good communication standards as identified by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • To supervise a therapy assistant in collaboration with Occupational Therapy.
  • To undertake relevant Continued Professional Development as required for the purposes of personal development and the clinical needs of the service.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with pre-verbal and verbal children with Autism/ Severe/Profound Learning Disabilities (Essential).
  • Experience of working within the Looked After Child/CAMHS system (Essential).
  • A Degree in speech and language therapy approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), and active HCPC registration (Essential).
  • Completion of NQP competency framework and substantial Grade 5/6 experience (Essential).
  • Relevant post-qualification experience required to be responsible for and autonomously supervise a Therapy Assistant (Essential).
  • You must have the ability to work in challenging situations, be highly organised and have excellent communication and people skills (Essential).
  • You must have ability to work autonomously within your specialist field and have excellent multi-agency liaison skills (Essential).
  • Expertise in Autism assessment (Desirable).
  • Expertise in Neurodiversity Affirming Approaches (Desirable).
  • IT skills, including Microsoft Office and database case management systems (Essential).
  • Candidates should have a full UK driving license and access to their own transport (Essential).
