Do you have the practical skills and patience to inspire young people as they prepare for working life? For many young people, the transition to adulthood can be overwhelming. Those facing additional barriers—such as social, emotional, or learning challenges—may struggle with self-regulation, engagement, and confidence. At New Meaning Training (NMT), we provide the structure, encouragement, and hands‑on practical experience they need to take control of their future.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver hands‑on, engaging Construction sessions that help young people explore creative techniques, build portfolios, and develop skills that matter.
  • Work 1:1 and in small groups to support learners at different levels of confidence and ability; collaborate with your team on scheme of work and lesson planning.
  • Encourage attendance, routine, and personal accountability in learners.
  • Support the development of learners' functional skills in Maths and English as part of their wider learning journey.
  • Keep accurate records of progress, behaviour, and engagement.
  • Use a trauma‑informed, relational approach to behaviour management, helping learners feel safe, respected and understood.
  • Reflect on your own practice and contribute to team development and training.
  • Work alongside support services, parents/carers and external agencies where relevant to promote learner success.

About the role

We’re looking for a Construction Multiskills Tutor who can engage and motivate young people through practical, hands‑on learning. Many of our learners thrive with kinaesthetic, “learning by doing” approaches—especially in construction, where teamwork, problem‑solving, and seeing tangible results can build both skills and confidence. Ideally, you’ll have experience working in construction trades or training others in practical skills, but we also know there are exceptional candidates who haven’t tutored before but have the right mindset and enthusiasm to excel. If you’re passionate about passing on your practical knowledge and want a meaningful career change, this could be the ideal opportunity. We’ll provide the training and support you need to step into the role. Many of our learners have complex needs, including autism, ADHD, anxiety, attachment disorders, and social‑emotional challenges, so patience, empathy, and adaptability are essential. At NMT, no two days are the same. You’ll lead practical construction sessions in areas like carpentry, tiling, decorating, and basic plumbing, helping young people develop employability skills, teamwork, and resilience along the way. Managing behaviour positively is a key part of this role, and you’ll be part of a dynamic, inclusive team that is committed to making a real difference.

Qualifications

  • Ideally a Level 3 Award in Education & Training and preferably a Certificate of Higher Education, but training can be provided to the right candidate without these qualifications.
  • IOSH Working Safely Qualification.
  • Experience in education, including Scheme of Work and Lesson Plan development.
  • Strong conflict management and resolution skills.
  • Excellent communication skills to inspire and motivate young people.
  • A team‑oriented and proactive attitude, with the ability to work independently.
  • Proven relationship‑building skills with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Empathy and understanding for young people, with alignment to New Meaning Training's values.
  • A passion for helping learners achieve their goals through adaptability and initiative in tailoring learning styles and activities.
  • Strong organisational skills and flexibility to meet deadlines and learner needs.
  • Attention to detail in data collection and record keeping.
  • Professionalism when engaging with learners, parents, and external stakeholders.
  • An understanding of or willingness to learn about current social issues (e.g., County Lines, the impact of COVID on mental health).
  • A creative flair for developing engaging activities that support individual learner goals.
  • Knowledge of Trauma‑Informed Practice and Attachment Theory.
  • Passion for sharing knowledge and enabling others.
  • Active, empathetic listener with a curious, open mind.
  • Committed to strengthening learners' confidence and skills.
  • Proactive in self‑development, including formal coaching.

We expect all colleagues to carefully read and adhere to policies. Our policy is to follow Safe Recruitment procedures; you will therefore be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check at the enhanced level before working with us.

About New Meaning Training

New Meaning Training (NMT) offers education with a difference. We are a post‑16 training and education provider dedicated to helping young people aged 16-25 discover their strengths and develop the confidence and skills to earn their own living. This academic year NMT has 300 young people from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Berkshire. Many of these learners are referred by secondary schools, pupil referral units, and Special Education Needs settings. Our journey began in 2015 with the opening of our first centre in High Wycombe, originally known as “Toolshed.” Ten years on, NMT continues to grow. In Berkshire we’re fortunate enough to have expanded into a second building in Reading for our construction learners. We have a range of learning programmes: Construction Multi‑skills, Creative Art & Design, Sports, Boost Workskills, and Achieve Lifeskills. All incorporate functional skills qualifications in Maths and English, along with tutorials and enrichment sessions to support our well‑rounded approach. We also provide a ‘Transition Support’ programme for young people with EHCPs who are not yet ready for a learning setting. NMT tailors its programmes to meet the needs of its learners, considering Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We comprehensively apply the principles of a Loving Care Approach (Trauma Informed Practice) to ensure all young people receive the support they need to thrive.
