As our Retail Fire and Safety Manager you will carry out store visits to ensure all stores are compliant with relevant Fire Safety & Health and Safety Legislation to ensure the safety of employees and members of the public whilst on our premises. Frequency of visits to be based on risk matrix. Visits to include completion of competent Fire Risk Assessment and overall inspection across the South East, Wales and Channel Islands. All findings to be risk assessed, commercially considered and comprehensively documented and fed back in detail to relevant parties.
You will be liaising with relevant parties if necessary and applicable to ensure all elements taken into account as part of the competent fire risk assessment while monitoring instructed actions to full conclusion and monitoring progress. Where required supporting short term action plans to manage any safety deficiencies to ensure minimum safety standards are achieved. To be responsible for delivering training and instruction to all stores relating to fire and Health and Safety within Territories. To include general H&S, First aid and mental wellbeing foundation.
The Role
- Identify legislation and best practice, make recommendations to implement new policies and procedures as required.
- Ensure management systems and controls are in place within territories to support a positive Fire, Health and Safety culture, taking commercial considerations into account.
- Provide advice on providing a safe workplace and public area according to legislation and company policy.
- Carry out regular store inspections to check policies and procedures are properly implemented and correct standards are maintained.
- Liaise with external authorities as requested and take appropriate action to prevent/reduce any formal action, liaising with relevant departments and liaising with Group Health and Safety Manager.
- Review fire audits in all stores and provide each store with a competent Fire Risk Assessment recorded centrally.
About You
- Must have relevant experience in a Fire Safety environment, have completed NEBOSH Gen Certificate in Health and Safety minimum and hold a recognised Fire Safety Qualification in Fire risk assessment / Management to level 4 as a minimum.
- Be willing to increase competency to level 5 /6 in Fire & general H&S.
- Must attend fire safety / H&S course periodically to ensure current with best practice and competencies are maintained.
- Needs to be aware of all other functional departmental activities and to work with them to achieve results.
- Must be able to influence and adapt behaviours depending on requirements ie coaching manager vs discussions with authorities.
- Must appreciate needs of business, have commercial understanding and be able to implement solutions to achieve company objectives but within legislation and ideally best practice.
- Needs to be able to communicate at all levels; and for advice to be respected.
- Needs to quickly assess potentially serious problems and make an informed decision quickly.
- Effective team working and the ability to work independently using own initiative.
- Detailed knowledge of current fire and health and safety legislation and its application in a retail environment.
- Evidence and maintain continued professional and personal development.
