Heywood Academy is a new special school in Rochdale that offers tailored educational support for students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and/or who may experience Speech, Language, and Communication Needs (SLCN) associated with ASC. The school has 75 places for pupils aged 11‑19 and provides a broad and balanced curriculum that enables students from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5 to access creative learning opportunities tailored to their individual needs. Our dedicated Forest School and horticultural curriculum allow students to learn in a natural outdoor environment that supports confidence, practical skills and wellbeing.

Role Summary

We invite applications from excellent practitioners to deliver environmental learning and horticulture to KS3 and to support KS4 students with ASC in developing their understanding of the natural world. The role offers the chance to lead inspiring projects within our Forest School and horticultural curriculum, design experiences where nature becomes the classroom and empower pupils to grow in confidence and practical skill.

Responsibilities

  • Teach outdoor education and deliver environmental and project‑based learning to KS3 pupils.
  • Lead, plan and deliver learning activities for KS4 students with ASC.
  • Apply ASC‑specific strategies to adapt teaching and learning for a wide range of needs.
  • Use current assessment practices, including data and progress tracking, to support learning outcomes.
  • Raise attainment and secure progress for learners with diverse needs.
  • Deliver high‑quality teaching and learning that inspires and motivates children and young people.
  • Deliver the Forest School and horticultural curriculum using the school’s dedicated outdoor learning environment.
  • Commit to continuous improvement and innovation, designing imaginative learning experiences aligned with pupils’ EHCP outcomes.
  • Build positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Previous experience of teaching outdoor education and/or delivering environmental and project‑based learning.
  • Proven record of leading, planning and delivering effective learning activities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of autism and how children and young people with ASC learn.
  • Strong organisational skills, proactive attitude and commitment to ongoing professional development.

Working Conditions

  • Salary: Teachers' Pay Scale + SEN (£2,787).
  • Hours of work: 1.0 FTE.
  • Based: Heywood Academy.
  • Commencing: September 2026.
  • Interview/observation: Thursday 21st May 2026.
  • Closing Date: Thursday 14th May 2026, 9 am.
  • Although based at the Heywood site, staff will be employed by the MAT and are expected to work at any site within the New Bridge Group.
