The role of Senior Care Worker involves providing personal care and support to people in their own homes in line with an agreed care and support plan. Responsibilities include:

  • Caring for service users in non-discriminatory ways, respecting each user's dignity, individuality, cultural and social background, and independence.
  • Working with other staff employed by the service and collaborating with staff from other services to provide an integrated approach to people's health and care.
  • Partnering with users' family members and friends involved in their care and support.
  • Contributing to individual wellbeing and being familiar with the service's safeguarding policy and procedures.
  • Supporting care workers when required and offering guidance to improve standards of the workforce.

Principal responsibilities include:

  • Helping with activities of daily living, such as getting up, going to bed, dressing, undressing, washing, bathing, and toilet arrangements.
  • Assisting service users with mobility problems and other physical disabilities, including the use and care of aids and personal equipment.
  • Making a person physically comfortable by making and changing beds, tidying rooms, doing light cleaning, laundry, and emptying commodes.
  • Assisting with eating and drinking by preparing meals, snacks, and drinks, and helping users who cannot eat or drink independently.
  • Contributing to specialised care plans for individuals with specific needs.
  • Helping users take prescribed medication as specified in their care plans.
  • Providing care for service users who are temporarily sick, including minor dressings and help with feeding.
  • Contributing to a person's end-of-life care.
  • Promoting users' mental and physical activity through conversation, prompting, and engaging in activities.
  • Reading and writing reports, participating in service users' meetings, and training activities as directed.
  • Completing notes, journals, concerns, incident reports, and meeting minutes to a good standard of English.
  • Reporting to the RM/Care Co-Ordinator on any urgent aspects of service user care.
  • Following emergency procedures and escalating issues immediately.
  • Adhering to all guidance, risk assessments, care plans, and updates to ensure client safety.
  • Complying with the service's guidelines and policies at all times.
  • Reporting significant changes in the health or circumstances of a service user to the service manager.
  • Encouraging and enabling service users to remain as independent as possible.
  • Actively participating in team meetings to ensure shared learning and communication.
  • Conducting spot checks, audits, and reviews, recording and reviewing concerns and incidents.
  • Writing and reviewing care plans and risk assessments effectively.

Essential criteria include being self-motivated, organised, flexible, caring, sensitive to the needs of others, an active team player, and a good communicator. Desirable criteria include flexibility in availability, previous care work experience, having transport, good morals, manners, work ethic, and knowledge of local neighbourhoods.

All staff are required to respect confidentiality and comply with the Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation. Staff must also be aware of their responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work, etc Act 1974.
