Embedded development with real purpose — and real long-term ownership. At Neupulse, we’ve developed a breakthrough wearable medical device that uses precisely controlled electrical pulses to help people regain control of conditions that profoundly affect their lives. The first commercial launch is in the UK, with the technology and firmware deliberately designed to support international rollout as the platform expands. Behind this product sits a scalable neuromodulation platform. The firmware is central to everything we do — real-time performance, safety, reliability, regulatory compliance, and long‑term patient outcomes.
We are now hiring our first in‑house Firmware Development Engineer to take sustained ownership of this critical system and help build internal firmware capability as the company grows.
Why this role is different
- This is not a maintenance role.
- This is not a short‑term delivery assignment.
You will:
- Become the first firmware engineer in-house, with long‑term ownership of system behaviour, architecture, and engineering standards.
- Work closely with an experienced outsourced firmware development partner, while gradually building and retaining critical knowledge internally.
- Join at a pivotal moment: the transition from first UK commercial launch to a platform designed for international scale.
- Grow your scope and influence as the product matures, the regulatory footprint expands, and the firmware function develops over time.
This role is designed for an engineer who wants to stay, grow, and deepen their impact over multiple years, seeing a regulated product evolve from early launch into a globally scaled platform.
What you’ll do
- Own and evolve the core firmware.
- Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware in C++ for STM32‑based wearable devices.
- Implement and optimise FreeRTOS for deterministic, safety‑critical operation.
- Deliver reliable, low‑power Bluetooth BLE connectivity with iOS and Android devices.
- Integrate sensors and peripherals using I2C and other serial interfaces.
- Act as the primary technical owner and interface to the outsourced firmware development partner.
- Review designs, code, test results, and evidence to ensure quality and regulatory rigor.
- Define and execute a phased transition of selected firmware components, testing, and maintenance responsibilities in‑house.
- Apply disciplined development practices from highly regulated or safety‑critical environments (medical, aerospace, automotive, or similar).
- Ensure firmware and documentation stand up to regulatory scrutiny (e.g. IEC 62304, ISO 13485, or equivalent frameworks).
- Improve robustness through automation, CI/CD, testing, and embedded cybersecurity practices.
What we’re looking for
- A proven track record delivering commercial‑grade embedded firmware in a regulated or safety‑critical environment.
- Strong hands‑on experience with STM32 microcontrollers and embedded C++.
- Deep understanding of RTOS (FreeRTOS) design and optimisation.
- Experience developing and debugging BLE‑based systems, ideally communicating with mobile devices.
- Comfort working in environments where evidence, traceability, and correctness matter.
- Direct medical‑device experience is valuable but not required — aerospace, automotive, or similar regulated backgrounds are very welcome.
Nice to have
- Experience with wearable or low‑power devices.
- CI/CD and automated testing for embedded software.
- Exposure to embedded cybersecurity concepts (secure communications, updates, threat awareness).
Why Neupulse
- Work that matters: your firmware directly affects people’s quality of life.
- Clear growth runway: a UK launch today, with deliberate plans for international scale.
- Real ownership: first firmware hire with the opportunity to shape standards, architecture, and future team growth.
- Serious engineering challenges: real‑time systems, power constraints, safety, regulation, and scale.
- Commercial momentum: a product moving from launch into broader adoption.
Eligibility to work
You must be eligible to work in the UK without restriction. Neupulse is unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
Neupulse is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
