The Opportunity
We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join our on-call firefighter team.
As an on-call firefighter, you will play a crucial role in responding to emergencies and keeping your community safe – all while balancing your work and personal life.
As an on-call firefighter, you’ll declare the times when you are available to respond to emergencies.
During your available hours, you must be within approximately four minutes of the fire station, ensuring a rapid response when duty calls.
You’ll also attend a weekly training evening, where you’ll develop your skills and team camaraderie.
What You’ll Do
An on-call firefighter for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) must meet several key requirements to be eligible for the role.
- Live or work within four minutes of their assigned fire station to ensure a prompt response to emergencies.
- Be at least 18 years old, physically fit, and pass fitness, strength, and medical assessments, including a breathing apparatus test.
- No formal qualifications are required, but applicants must demonstrate teamwork, problem-solving skills, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
- A high level of commitment is essential, as on-call firefighters must be available for duty at agreed-upon times, responding to a pager when required.
- Training is provided, covering firefighting techniques, first aid, and the use of equipment, and recruits must complete initial and ongoing training to maintain their skills.
- A flexible approach, strong community ties, and a willingness to engage in fire prevention activities are also important aspects of the role.
