About the role
We are looking for a Vehicle Technician (HGV) to join our Operations and Resilience Department at the Technical Services Centre. The role supports lifesaving operations in the Fire and Rescue Service and offers opportunities for specialist skill development.

Key Responsibilities
- Maintain the Services fleet of appliances, light vans, cars and marine craft.
- Carry out fault diagnosis and repairs on reported defects.
- Prepare vehicles for MOT.
- Perform all work safely at all times.
- Attend stations and other service locations for maintenance and repairs.
Qualifications & Experience
- Time‑served and qualified engineer with a minimum Level 3 qualification in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance.
- Demonstrable experience diagnosing and rectifying faults, including electrical/electronic systems in modern vehicles and plant.
- Experience in mechanical repairs involving hydraulics, diesel and petrol engines, automatic transmissions, retarders, full air braking systems, ABS and traction control.
- Ability to fabricate basic components from metal and wood.
- Excellent communication and IT skills.
- Consistent ability to meet deadlines while producing high‑quality work.
- Commitment to TWFRS values of Safety, Integrity, Inclusivity, and Learning, and adherence to ethical conduct.

About the Department
The Technical Services Centre is a purpose‑built facility on Baltic Road in Gateshead. On site facilities include a staff gym and ample free parking. The department coordinates asset storage, supply, maintenance, evaluation, specification and compliance with technical, legal and policy standards, supporting continuous improvement in service delivery.
