London Fire Brigade (LFB) is London’s fire and rescue service – one of the largest firefighting and rescue organisations in the world. We are here to make London a safer city. Employing over 5000 people across our operational team (our firefighters), control (our call handlers who answer 999 calls), fire safety and our non‑operational team (our team who work behind the scenes to support our front‑line services, which includes Fleet, IT, HR, Finance, Procurement, Communications team and many more).

The LFB is looking for an inspiring and highly capable Engineering and Monitoring Manager to join our Fleet Liaison Engineering & Equipment Team (FLEET) on a permanent basis. Based at Union Street Headquarters (SE1 0LL) with the flexibility of hybrid working, this is a rare opportunity to play a pivotal role in supporting one of the world’s busiest fire and rescue services.

In this role, you will lead a team of engineers and support staff, ensuring that the Brigade receives high quality service and best value from the Fleet & Operational Equipment Management and Maintenance Contract, as well as other long-term agreements. You will also provide expert engineering guidance to support the Brigade’s transport and operational equipment needs.

You’ll be the Brigade’s expert voice on engineering matters — influencing decisions, shaping future developments, and ensuring our vehicles and equipment remain safe, efficient, and fit for frontline work.

We’re looking for someone who brings credibility, confidence, and technical expertise. You may be:

  • A skilled commercial vehicle technician with hands‑on experience and a BTEC (or equivalent) qualification, or
  • An experienced engineering manager with a strong grasp of maintenance practices, vehicle repair principles, and the proven ability to lead a technical team.

Whichever route you’ve taken, you’ll be a problem solver with excellent judgement, able to stay composed under pressure and make sound, timely decisions.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a clean CAT B full UK driving licence. (The successful candidate will be required to take and pass the Brigade’s driving assessment).

Assessment Overview

Stage 1

  • Hold a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) (National) or possess a recognised diploma or qualification issued by a professional institute such as the Society of Operations Engineers, or be willing to obtain CPC.
  • Experience of managing the operation of a mixed vehicle and operational equipment fleet within a client/contractor environment.
  • Experience of managing, motivating and monitoring the performance of a group of staff and ensuring that they are adequately trained and developed.
  • Experience in working as a skilled technician in commercial vehicle operations, ideally supported by BTEC or equivalent qualifications. Alternatively, proven experience managing an engineering department, combined with a strong understanding of maintenance principles and vehicle repair practices, with the ability to lead and apply these effectively.

Please note that we will score the evidence you provide based on the competencies listed in the selection criteria above. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend stage 2.

Stage 2

Assessment for this role is due to take place late‑March/early‑April 2026. Please be advised that if you are unable to make the scheduled assessment date, we may not be able to make alternative arrangements.
