Brief Description

You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day. As a technician you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly. Our technician community comes from a variety of different backgrounds, and this might be the first time that you’ve even considered a career in rail. We’re focused on your transferable skills and behaviours and, if you can demonstrate them, we’ll provide all the necessary training to have you working safely and competently out on the network.

Qualifications

  • Electrical installation qualifications at a minimum of NVQ level 2 (NVQ level 3 preferred)
  • Applicants must hold Level B High Voltage Competence may be awarded at Level 2 if the individual has successfully achieved:
  • C&G 2382 and C&G 2365, or an advanced apprenticeship in railway engineering with an electrical E&P bias, or course(s) deemed equivalent, such as courses provided by the armed services, or provide evidence of previous experience in an electrical industry verified as acceptable by the Route Head of Asset [E&P]
  • City & Guilds – 236 Part 2, 2360, 2330, 2365, 2357, 8202 or 5357 and 2381.
  • BTEC – Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installation.
  • EAL – Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installation.
  • Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you opt for the standard maintenance contract.

    About The Role

    Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the team’s operatives. Working outside in all conditions, at all times of the year, day or night, you may be involved in demanding manual work and transport of kit across tricky terrain. A safety‑focused, respectful, rule‑abiding team player will be critical. As a natural team player, you may also lead the team when asked by the team leader. You’ll deliver work safely, checking the team has the right competencies and act as a role model for safe working behaviours, challenging any potential risks.

    • Leadership – leading, motivating, and directing a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
    • Effective communicator – strong communication skills, delivering clear instructions.
    • Technical skills – knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques.
    • Safety – consistently role‑model safe behaviours and confident to challenge unsafe situations.
    • Problem solver – persistent in finding safe and effective solutions, keeping skills up‑to‑date.
    • Willingness to learn – continuous development of relevant skills and competencies.
    • Relevant qualification – ideally hold NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to discipline, or equivalent experience.

    Additional Information

    • Shifts – changing pattern including days, nights and weekends.
    • Outdoor working – comfortable in all weathers.
    • Safe working – subject to drug/alcohol testing, medical assessment, BPSS pre‑employment checks, hearing and eyesight examination.
    • Driving – category B licence required to drive Network Rail vehicles.
    • Commute – within a 60‑minute commute of the location.
