Brief Description
You\’ll help keep our nation moving every day. This is a critical part of the daily upkeep of the rail network.
You will establish safety arrangements and check the quality of work as you direct a team involved in inspection and faulting, maintenance and renewal.
About the Role (External)
From inspection and faulting through to maintenance and renewal, you’ll play a hands-on role. You’ll ensure work is done efficiently and to the highest standards. Safety is a priority. You’ll establish safety arrangements and ensure staff and contractors follow safe systems of work. You’ll monitor the quality of work and the competence of your team, ensuring assets are compliant and that vehicles, plant, tools, equipment and materials are fit for purpose. You’ll compile a range of vital reports.
Responsibilities
- Works Delivery Track — maintain, inspect, and repair the track network (Permanent Way/P-Way) to keep the railway safe and efficient. This is a manual role with rails, sleepers and ballast, plus related drainage and ancillary structures.
- You matter to your team — direct, organise and motivate a high-performing team.
- Your Skills Matter — lead essential criteria and ensure delivery of safe, efficient work.
Essential Criteria
- Experience of organising and controlling the safe and efficient delivery of work
- Excellent communication skills, both in person and in writing
- Knowledge of discipline-specific maintenance, inspection, faulting and renewal techniques
- Knowledge of relevant standards, procedures and instructions
- A clear and inspirational leader with a strong sense of direction
Desirable Criteria
- Hold or be working towards an NVQ level 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject or have attained the appropriate level of knowledge gained through equivalent relevant experience
- Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need
Role Fit and Additional Information
Shifts involve days, nights, and weekends. Outdoor work in all weather. Offers of employment are subject to drug and alcohol testing and pre-employment checks, including medical, BPSS, hearing and eyesight examinations. A driving licence (category B) is required to drive Network Rail vehicles. You must be within a 60-minute commute of the location you apply for.
This role is safety-critical and includes days, nights and weekend working. We provide training to develop both technical and leadership skills and a clear career path within Network Rail.
