About our route
Central Route sits at the heart of Britain’s railway network, covering critical commuter and freight lines in and out of Birmingham. It includes the Chiltern Main Line, the Snow Hill line, the Cross City line, and connections to cities such as Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, and Oxford. Central Route is home to Birmingham New Street station, the busiest outside of London, with over 170,000 passengers daily. This route plays a vital role in supporting the UK\’s economy and connecting communities.
About The Role (External)
What will you be doing?
A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As an Operative for Track, you’ll be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network, (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way) to keep the railway safe and efficient. This is a very manual role as you’ll be working with rails, sleepers and ballast that support the trains, together with their associated drainage and ancillary structures.
Our Operatives work outside in all conditions, at all times of the year, day, or night and weekends. You’ll be involved in demanding manual work, often with the need to transport kit, across tricky terrain. Being safety focused, respectful of rules and a team player will be critical as you’ll often be working next to moving trains travelling at high speed.
This is a brilliant opportunity for you to kick start your career within the Railway if you have a passion for making a difference to the traveling public. We will give you all the training and competencies you require so you can fully succeed in your role and a have fulfilling career within the Track discipline.
Please note you will be based out of our High Wycombe Depot and will be required to travel down to London Marylebone and up to Aylesbury due to the patch the team cover. You will need to live within a 60 minute commute of our High Wycombe Depot.

- Hold and retain competencies relevant to this post, required by the business need.
- Ideally hold (or be working towards) an NVQ 1 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject.
- Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need.
